G'day all,
Ok , I am currently trying to set up a home network , where the 2 pc's are both owned by the same person, but in 2 different buildings ( 200' distance on cable ) and want to have FULL Share inside the LAN .
She wants to be able to see her email from either pc, and connect the internet from either.
The one , has both a NIC & 56k modem , the other is thru a SMC wireless router ( she was supposed to get cable, but they havent hooked it up , yet )
The Router, a wireless with 4 RJ45's in the back , plus the WAN port, is just a point in the line. I have both pc's in LAN ports in the router . I can share files... between the 2... but no total control either way.
I have them both on the same workgroup..... see the shares.... but cant get them to use remote desktop to enable the full share of internet or specifics , like email ( mozilla )
Now I found some good cable connection description diagrams, and saw that I had goofed on them, so off to make the corrections now..... but will they be able to use the router as a HUB ? it's a BB router, but w/o the WAN till RR gets there to make it hot.
Have I confused this thread already ??? she wants to be able to see her email , and use the internet from either location. is it possible ?
thanks in advance,
home network problem

home network problem
nothing like my Virtual Spitfire Mk IXc and a few wingmen to cover my 6 !
is this a correct diagram?
PC1-------------200' ethernet cable--------smc router----internet
PC2-------------wifi---------------------------- /
if they are both physically on the same router both with standard lan IPs and operating normally both should have internet access with no configuration at all.
using webmail is a good idea if she checks it from both computers, or else using outlook for example will isolate messages on each pc or leave duplicates on both which is annoying. the other option could be to setup a server to store mail, and leave it on to access from either computer.

nope , they see each other , and at one point , had them sending files back and forth , but
pc1----intnl 56k & ethernet card----200' cable---- SMC router----pc2 ( and laptop , thru wireless off router , but not really use at present )
both pc's have ethernet cards ( same brand realtek ) and are connected thru router LAN ports ( #1 , 3 )
they see share files, on other , thru same name workgroup.
all 3 pc's have XP pro .
but only pc1 gets internet , cant see it from other's
can send to other printer and visa versa .... but it has me wondering if the router ( which I cannot configure , for lack of Broadband conn @ WAN port ) needs to be a simple hub , then set router off one port there for laptop.
all pc's are owned by same one person. and all privaliges are set.. even tried NetBIEU adding... but didnt change anything.
also have Sygate Home network ( still free version , to see if it will ) but alas noooo.
tried remote desktop , have all FW's down.. AV off.... but still no.
what have I missed ???
is it the BB router ??? just not letting the right packets thru ???
