Can't change my MTU value!

I am connecting thru a router. I am on SBC DSL. This is what the TCP/IP Analyzer spit back at. I've tried like 4 different programs, the registry itself and I still can't change the goddamn thing. I am currently using WinXP Pro.
MTU = 1440
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.
MSS = 1400
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 257600
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64400

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
515200 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
128800 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
64400 (MSS x 46)
bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10304 kbps (1288 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4121.6 kbps (515.2 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 58 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000
Its really starting to piss me off.

Or even better link to a real PPPoE FAQ http://www.carricksolutions.com/pppoe.php and click on the hardware page which has instructions for upping multiple routers MTUs.
