Go too the Internet Priorities and double click on TCP/IP, click advanced, and uncheck Automatic metric, and put a 1 in the box, and then in the Default Gateways, hit the EDIT button, and clear the check in Automatic metric, and again put a 1 in there, and then restart, it speeds up the internet a lot, i did benchmark tests with and without, and the Automatic metric of 1 speeds are A LOT better. Try it out and let me know how it worked.

Jim_Morrison197 could you be more clearer .
When i put ''advanced'' , there are :
IP settings , DNS , WINS , Options..
I unchecked ''automatic metric'' and put 1 on ''interface metric''..Untill here has been ok ; the defaults gateways are over of automatic automatic metric?Right? I'm not able to click on ''edit'' , it's just possible to click on ''add''...
Can you explain me.. this?Anf if I'm wrong ; can you send me some ''lights''... :D

hey jim on my network card i can do the first part of your tweak. i unchecked Automatic Metric and put a 1. but when i click add under default gateway and uncheck/put 1 in box i wont let me add it. theres an add button but its greyed out. should i keep the first part of the tweak if the second wont work?

Not sure what number to put in. I'm playing with 1 now... and it's working fine. I might do some benchmark test later and see what works for me.

According to the article you posted 1 would be the best value.

It require that you're using a router with a internal IP address

MadDoctor

Do you mean that with no router, this tweak dont work ?

Not really. I don't have a router and it didn't do anything for me. Maybe I should go buy a router!

Well the article states that WindowMetric is what aids Windows in selecting what NIC to use for systems that have multiple NICs and multiple paths to the same resource (ie the Internet per say). The WindowMetric is based on the throughput speed of the NIC. The higher the nubmer, the lower the throughput windows will think the NIC has. Therefore windows selects the NIC with the lower WindowMetric for use first, and then goes to the second NIC and so on when the first is overloaded, or down.

Now I definetly noticed a speed improvement and I have 1 NIC, but I am behind a router. This could possibly be because the automatic WindowMetric setting is being calculated or whatever.

Obviously if you have only 1 NIC you're not worried about which NIC windows should use for connecting so a value of 1 would work. But that also contradicts this because WindowMetric shouldn't matter if you have 1 NIC anyway. But sill, I saw an improvement, so I'm happy.

Vic Mackey the only time you should have that tweak is if you have static ips on computer

Vic if you don't have static ips yes you will notice a bigger boost

If you using dynamic routing it takes more load on the router then static i'll show a link

i tried this tweak and it worked great.i use cable isp-shaw.ca-static ip`s
linksys befsr11 router.surfing etc was noticeably faster,dsl speed tests,resulted in a higher dl\ul speeds.for some reason,outlook express would not work-no pop3 error.went back to auto settings
for nic & email works.

Sounds like when you tried the tweak you forgot to add new ip for the filtering for example if you dhcp enabled the router gave ip where if you had static set on comps you have goto the portfowarding section and add those ports.. I could be wrong :D

After reading this thread I looked at my XP box and changed the setting and it does work. I believe Dannjr found this a while back when installing XP for a client and he realized it was slower than 2K on the same connection. This is set to 1 by default in 2K, reguardless a good find.

:D
