MSI looks like they will be making some ATI products....starting with some OEM products in the Euro market.

I've been reading about the possiblity of "no more exclusive vid card chipset makers"...seems MSI is making the move.

To me, that's good anyways. That's the way video cards were years ago...brands would make models on various vid chipsets. Just like motherboards...I mean, you see Asus make Intel, nVidia, Via, and...ugh...SiS. Same with other brands of mobo makers. So the question remains "Why not with vid cards?"

As much as i hate to say, Nvidia could be in some trouble. The fu*k up they made with the FX is turning alot of people to go with ATI. Now all i see is companys starting to team up with ATI. Even the almighty Intel is working with ATI. Hell i even ordered a 9700. (shame) I gave Nvidia a chance and was waiting for the FX, And all the ATI boys were spanking my ass. But if you can't beat'em, Join'em. LOL

great for ati, but we need competition in the market, so hopefully they will not go belly up.

Hopefully nVidia won't go thaaaaat low....

They're down on the mat.....will struggle to stand up by this summer...I bet things it will be a more even match around next winter...but it will be more like nVidia and Intel with their CPU's....each taking a brief lead....gone are the days of total domination though.

yes, lets hope NVidia will release a product to at least compete with ATI

ATI being a Canadian company, would the FTC even have immediate jurisdiction over such a merger/buyout?

remember Daimler Chrsysler merger..

Daimler/Mercedes Benz is a german company..

there's many ways for one company to acquire control of another, regardless of where the company(s) are based. japanese corporations have purchased many foreign businesses.


this reminds me of Intel's big mistakes a couple/few years ago. cruddy mainboard chipsets (i820 and i840) and the PIII 1.13 flop really allowed AMD to capitalize and gain a good deal of market mindshare. end result?....... better competition, rather than a lack therof. Intel stumbled for a bit, but got their act together. i see the same happening with nVidia/ATI. unless nVidia really REALLY blows it again... and again and again and again.


and as far as ATI buying out nVidia? well, i suppose anything's possible. but the reality is that ATI is miniscule in terms of size/net worth compared to nVidia. ATI alone doesn;t have the resources by itself for such an aquisition (at this point). they have a ways to go before that is even an option. a canadian corporation like Seagram's on the other hand, could make this entirely possible. ATI just couldn;t do it alone...... at least not for a few years.

Well, remember a little while ago when ATI was hardly even on the map..Nvidia was the only card in town then in the gf1 and gf2 days, if you were a gamer. Nvidia will come back with something in time...its just ATI's time now.

ATI was always on the map....quite strongly too...maybe not in the gaming community....but if you go way way back....they have always been huge in the OEM market. Meaning, basic video cards....Mach64 was popular back when Windows 95 was being hatched. All through the Win95/98/2K and even currently....just about all of the big name servers (how many Dell and Compaq servers do you think are out there?) have ATI video cards built onto their motherboard, most corporate grade laptops have ATI video, and although a joke for gamers, just about all corporate grade desktops had either Matrox G100/200, or ATI Rage Pro video.

nVidia has only recently gotten into the OEM market, and has only recently gotten into, and begun dominating, the higher end graphics workstation graphics market.

If ATI gobbles anybody up...I'll put my money on Matrox.

yeah i do hope nvidia comes back real strong for two reasons:

1) without any competition, prices will go up, and technology does not advance as fast


2) I always preferred nvidia cards and their drivers over ATI

ATI trades on the nasdaq (as well as canadain markets) so it is bound by SEC regulation.
