JCOS sparked this when he replied in my Steak for dinner thread...mentioning the Big Wheel.


I thought it would be cool to start a thread on our favorite toys growing up.

Some favorites of mine as I try to joggle my mind:



***Erector Sets....leading to Lego's also.
***Mattel had this cool helicoptor toy, where you'd plop the central unit in the middle of the floor...it had a runner going out to a control outside the perimeter..with two levels, one for direction, the other for throttle. You'd lay on the ground outside of the "circle of flight" and crank the helicopter round 'n round. Some variations had things you had to due, rescue something with a little hook on the copter, etc. I never see this toy anymore.
***Cox and Testors .049 control line gas planes, leading into radio control cars and planes when you got a bit older.
***Guillow balsa wood planes, various levels of difficulty assembling, rubber band powered.
***Estes solid fuel rockets
***There was this cool flying bird, called the Ornithopter. Wind up powered, flapping wings. I loved flying toys.....as a kid growing up, brought ideas that dreams are made of.

Yup...Yard Darts....they were fun for family cookouts 'n stuff.

Other outdoor toys...how about those plastic rockets you filled with a bit of water, then pumped up with a small air pump...slid a release...and up up and away it went!

AFX Slot Racers! We'd combine all our tracks together into one really huge racetrack at someone's house...and have a blast. Used to modify those cars a lot also...getting the special high grip "white" tires on the G rated cars.

ya i still have my H.O. cars and track, thought about setting them up some day but need some room to do it in.

pogo sticks, tree forts, swimming all good stuff

Legos owned me and my brothers.

here are a few pics of my favorite car that i just took.

Can't remember the name of the thing, but I loved it.

It was a projector that I could put a any picture from a magazine under it and it projected the picture up on the wall. Great for tracing pictures for projects at school.

They probably still have those advertised in the back of Popular Science and the like.

i gave one of these as a gift not but 2 years ago ... Pretty hip...

i have that...

who remembers the marble roller coaster-- you used two small plastic tubes to create a track for marbles. That kicked ass.

Endless fun with rubber bands

I had a newspaper route and would have these 5 pound bags of rubberbands.

String them together and run them across the road to watch cars come to a screeching halt...

Make rubber-band guns with rulers and shot cards and action figures and each other...

Dude! I had a blue one just like that! WOW!
Also an orange '57 Chevy Nomad, a green VW Bug..done up California style. A Lotus Indy car. Another Indy car that was, hmmm...I think Renault made it...had 4x small wheels up front instead of the usual 2x.

Can't remember the other quite yet.

question... is that one of those key cars???

- Green Machine (like a Big Wheel)

- Rock'em Sock'em Robots

- Evil Knievel Stunt Cycle

- Chinese yo-yo's (telescoping rolled up paper on a stick)

mine isnt a straight track like your making it out to be... it'll go back and forth... do jumps... there was a starting gate that held eight marbles and you flipped it up to start it... and the marbles could go in different paths...

I think my all-time favorite was a heavy cast iron farm tractor with lugged wheels that went tok tok tok when I rolled it across the floor.

oh, yeah! liked that as well as Lego's and Lincoln Logs. great stuff.

And transformers ( not the toy transformers ) but voltage transformers . My friends and I used to shock each other wth the stuff

Atari 2600 a true Classic.

Other than that I was big into Voltron, Heman, GI Joe, Transformers, Tonka Trucks. Also Had quite a few Lego sets. Probably my favorite though was Construx I built alot of cool stuff with those things.
