If it's anything close to a Crystal Orb at full speed, then forget it! I'll stick with a stock 9700 Pro heatsink and wait for it to burn up.

That thing's gonna look beastly in me rig! Can't wait.
Prolly gonna have a 9700pro shortly too, put one in my buddy's new gaming rig, he hates it.

Why does he hate it?

Too much tweaking to get one game to run right, then the other games don't run right. It's like, you spend 5 minutes adjusting it to run one game well, then all the other games get knocked out. Wanna play another game? Gotta fitz with the card to set it to run the next game, then your prior game is knocked out. Pissed at me cuz I talked him out of getting a ti4200 and to get the ATI, so he plops down 300 bucks for the card, and hates it. Think he's getting a 4200 this weekend, if he hasn't already.
Brand new machine built from scratch, P4, 845 chipset, WinXP, the rig screams (15k on 3DMark2k1), but UT runs with improper textures. Put's his older GF2Ultra in, and UT looks sweet.

ATi seems to have been pretty good at issuing driver releases that fix many of the games that struggle with the 9700 Pro, though. Still, having high FSAA and AS filtering on while maintaining great framerate and smoothness while playing is too much of a boon for to skip the Radeon IMO...

That's what I though, re: the driver issue. When I was talking him into getting the card, first thing out of his mouth was "ATI..Bah...all you hear about is crappy drivers". And my rebuttle was "Yeah, but from what I hear, and read, ATI's sworn to shed that old reputation, and appears to be doing a good job so far".
But he sent me a couple of screenshots of the Facing Worlds map...and I balked. Spent all of last weekend on the phone with him hearing is complaining, and trying this, that, and the other for tweaks. Radeonator, Rage3D Tweak, making sure the very latest 3.0 Catalyst drivers....squeekly clean WinXP fresh install. Nothing. I was teetering on getting one myself instead of the FX...but not after seeing those screenshots.

Looks like (ugh) ATi got another victim eh? Yeah i know, it's 1 out of 100. But that 1 could have been me. I've had so many issues with ATi in the past i just disliked them period. I remember saying i would'nt want one for free and someone replied "yeah..right. You mean if someone came by and said here's a 9700 pro for free, you would'nt take it"? I said no. They asked why not? "you'd be crazy if you didn't" I just said it would'nt be right if i passed on this tumor.
I'll stick with my Nvidia thank you very much
Too bad about your friend and his ordeal with that card

I hope he gets it straightened out.
MMMM that looks way to big

But look on the bright side, the geforce fx wont contribute to your system heat with that kind of cooling system, but u guys must admit it looks mighty impressive just hope the scores look the same.

Mmmm the noise

I hope someone at Nvidia stumbles onto this beautifull forum we got here and takes notice of this thread. If they make it noisy it's going to be swallowed down hard by the gaming community, Nvidia must keep their ears wide open and their engineers very close, for all that we know it will only reach a noise level of 30 or so db's

A lot of people say ATI's new card will be right behind it...any links?

I'm quite sure nVidia has thought about noise, it's not their first performance card. Remember, you're just seeing reference designs also. Most makers implement their own HSF's, as we've seen in every nVidia card made so far.
Plus it's not a radical new design, it's not all that different to the OTES system Abit has already produced in current GF4 cards.

i'm happy with my 9700 pro's, i haven't had any major problems or texture corruption with mine, with any driver set
and i play a lot of games
honestly i think most of the problems are end user problems... or just how their system setup is etc...
it IS finicky in AGP 8x mobo's, BUT that is not ATI's fault
so keep it at AGP 4X in a good mobo and that solves that problem
the ONLY game i had a problem in was SOF2, i got teh stuttering... but that is fixed now with the 3.0a drivers
quake3 never stuttered for me, which was one of the compliants, ogl stuttering... but i've never experienced that except in sof2, which is fixed now

NO one has one? Surely there must be some floating around out there, what with its "imminent" availability for sale (or at least pre-order)...

I did'nt say the (ugh) ATi suxed. What i said was what I went thru with them and how I feel about them from my own experience. If ppl here including brent have an ATi and it werks great for them, that's great!
For me, personally, I don't like them. That's why my preference is Nvidia. That's what works for me.

Everybody wants that card if it kicks as much donkey as everybody thinks it will or shall i say hope. What really interests me would be to see what ATI have up there sleeve. I got the radeon 8500 at the start i had lot's of problems but overall it doesnt give me a days problems.
