Yes it is, but it's a qualified one. As I stated a couple of posts back, not everyone is able to discern between the entertainment and reality of it all.
I can see points in both sides of this. Undoubtedly some people are desensitized and thus influenced over time, but I'm not sure it's the material that's driving it. It may be that the demand and sentiment is already there, thus the material is produced to meet it. Cultural degeneration is a problem, as is violence, and ill treatment of one's fellow man, but ultimately, Eminem has the right to say what he wishes and so do his critics. I wouldn't want to change that. There's not an immediate "solution" but you can start with the education of the young (yeah I know that's what everyone says) and make sure that people eventually understand that much of this is simply marketing that panders to a certain segment. People identify with Eminem (and all the other bad boys of music history from Alice Cooper to Marilyn Manson) for reasons. Until people understand those reasons well enough to consider them when making criticisms, their criticisms are gonna be met with a middle finger. I've met a few myself.

With 6+ billion people in the world that statement you just made goes without saying... sure theres a select few that will mock or mimic every word their idol says...
More NOT than WOULD be perswaded by lyrics.

If people assume I'm blaming only the material, then I'm sorry for not being clearer. But through the near-deification (via the popular culture and media) of outspoken musicians such as Eminem, more and more people begin to desire to emulate it, but only for fame and adulation for being so brash and not from the same impetus that Eminem has for doing it.

True, it's a cycle, and finding the source may be like choosing the chicken or the egg.

I've never said we should shut him up. I am just opposed to the "hip factor" of Eminem becoming engrained in the minds of American youth, by people giving him accolades for being some kind of brilliant musician.
Originally posted by Burke But I have a certain sets of beliefs and values that would not view discouraging homosexual behavior as "narrowmindedness."
Well, I doubt I'll be able to change your mind.... but, I just don't see any evidence that supports such "values" as being anything more than excuses for cruelty to a great percentage of the population. Sexual orientation is a historic and natural variation among human beings. If you're not forcing yourself on anyone, your bio-makeup should be recognized as the natural state that it is, no differently than being left-handed or brown-eyed.
I'm sure he REALLY means that he wants to have sex with his mother... he's JUST RHYMING. It's sort of like Wrestling... it's only ENTERTAINMENT. God... you people get so uptight for nothing.
Listen to his lyrics carefully... listen to "Sing for the moment"
here are the 2nd and 3rd verses to that track.. don't worry.. it ISN'T VIOLENT or gay bashing...
Entertainment is changin, intertwinin with gangsters
In the land of the killers a sinner's mind is a sanctum
Holy or unnholy, only have one homie
Only this gun - lonely cause don't anyone know me
Yet everybody just feels like they can relate
I guess words are a mother****er, they can be great
or they can degrate; or even worse, they can teach hate
It's like these kids hang on every single statement we make
like they worship us, plus all the stores ship us platinum
Now how the **** did this metamorphosis happen?
From standin on corners and porches just rappin
to havin a fortune, no more kissin ass
But then these critics crucify you, journalists try to burn you
Fans turn on you, attorneys all want a turn at you
to get they hands on every dime you have
They want you to lose your mind every time you mad
So they can try to make you out to look like a loose cannon
Any dispute won't hesitate to produce handguns
That's why these prosecutors wanna convict me
Strictly just to get me off of these streets quickly
But all they kids be listenin to me religiously
So I'm signin CD's while police fingerprint me
They're for the judge's daughter but his grudge is against me
If I'm such a ****in menace this **** doesn't make sense B!
It's all political, if my music is literal
and I'm a criminal how the **** can I raise a little girl?
I couldn't; I wouldn't be fit to
You're full of **** too Guerrera - that was a FIST that hit you!
This is one you have to read
They say music can alter moods and talk to you
Well can it load a gun up for you and c*ck it too?
Well if it can, and the next time you assault a dude
Just tell the judge it was my fault, and I'll get sued
See what these kids do is hear about us totin pistols
and they want to get one cause, they think the ****'s cool
Not knowin we really just protectin ourselves
We entertainers, of course the ****'s affectin our sales
You ignoramus, but music is reflection of self
We just explain it, and then we get our checks in the mail
It's ****ed up ain't it? How we can come from practically nothin
to bein able to have any ****in thing that we wanted
That's why we, sing for these kids who don't have a thing
except for a dream and a ****in rap magazine
Who post pin-up pictures on they walls all day long
Idolize they favorite rappers and know all they songs
Or for anyone who's ever been through **** in they lives
'Til they sit and they cry at night wishin they'd die
'Til they throw on a rap record and they sit and they vibe
We're nothin to you - but we're the ****in **** in they eyes
That's why we, seize the moment try to freeze it and own it
Squeeze it and hold it, cause we consider these minutes golden
And maybe they'll admit it when we're gone, just let our spirits live on
through our lyrics that you hear in our songs and we can...
<sarcastic>um... yeah</sarcastic>

Read every single lyric since you do when he talks about raping his mother so much....
Song: Stimulate
[Intro]
Psst... Hey, listen
I love my job, makes me feel like... Superman! (haha)
Can you fly? I can - wanna see?
[Chorus]
I.. am only entertainin' you, my
goal is to stimulate makin' you high
And take you and I to a place you can't see
But I believe you can fly
I don't mean nobody harm I'm just partyin'
I'm not your dad, not your mom, not your guardian
Just a man who's on the mic so let me entertain you
(I'm here to save you
I've come here for the ride
So let me entertain you
And everything will be fine)
[Eminem]
My lyrical content is constantly under fire, no wonder why
Constantly bombed back to combat attacks to constant concepts
When lyrics are constantly took out of context
Failure to communicate with Congress has
Been a problem for the longest I guess but
Maybe one day we can make some progress
Food for thought see how long it takes to digest
Feelin' good when I should be ashamed
**** I really shoulda fell but I stood, see I came
Like a flame in the night, like a ghost in the dark
There's a ray, there's a light, there's a hope, there's a spark
But when planets collide they'll never see eye-to-eye
Until they decide to set their differences aside
And this is why only one of us will survive
So children, follow my lead and feel the vibe because
[Chorus]
I am only entertainin' you
My goal is to stimulate makin' you high
And take you and I to a place you can't see
But I believe you can fly
I don't mean nobody harm I'm just partyin'
I'm not your dad, not your mom, not your guardian
Just a man who's on the mic so let me entertain you
(I'm here to save you
I've come here for the ride
So let me entertain you
And everything will be fine)
[Eminem]
My music can be slightly amusin'
You shouldn't take lyrics so serious it might be confusin'
Tryin' to separate the truth from entertainment
It's stupid ain't it? I get sick just tryin' to explain it
See I could sit and argue wit' you but it goes beyond
Just bein' a snot, pointy-nosed, bleach blonde
'Cuz I came here to uplift, let your woes be gone
Tell 'em to get ****ed and just mosey on
Constantly movin', constantly usin'
The Constitution as a form of restitution
Bless the children, nothin' less than brilliant
"Let Me Entertain You" like Robbie Williams
I'll be here when y'all are gone rebuildin'
World revolvin', still evolvin', still Slim
How many kids'll copy? Probably millions
But I'ma do this as a ****in' hobby 'til then 'cuz
[Chorus]
I am only entertainin' you
My goal is to stimulate makin' you high
And take you and I to a place you can't see
But I believe you can fly
I don't mean nobody harm I'm just partyin'
I'm not your dad, not your mom, not your guardian
Just a man who's on the mic so let me entertain you
(I'm here to save you
I've come here for the ride
So let me entertain you
And everything will be fine)
[Eminem]
My lyrical content contains subject matter that sucks up all these ****ed up
Young kids at an alarmin' rate, common denominate
Add it up, and you see just why I dominate
I try to stimulate but kids emulate
and mimic every move you make, Slim, you great!
But wait, can't you see I'm only hear to entertain?
I gotta be the one to go against the grain
'Cuz now I see it, feel it, live it but it's inhumane
For me to see you be influenced then pretend you ain't
But they don't understand that I been through pain
If you get to know me I can be a friend you gain
But you can't just stand there and try to judge
It hurts but your jealousy prolly tears you up inside as much
And as such, I pleasure every button that I touch
I treasure every glutton that I punish in my lust but
[Chorus]
I am only entertainin' you
My goal is to stimulate makin' you high
And take you and I to a place you can't see
But I believe you can fly
I don't mean nobody harm I'm just partyin'
I'm not your dad, not your mom, not your guardian
Just a man who's on the mic so let me entertain you
(I'm here to save you
I've come here for the ride
So let me entertain you
And everything will be fine)
[Eminem Singing Backwards]
(I'm here to save you
I've come here for the ride
So let me entertain you
And everything will be fine)

Actually Socrates was considered a poisoner of young minds.
I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful. Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. And all in all and on the whole: some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer.

So if I listen to Queen or Elton John does that mean I'll turn into a gay man or wanting to explore other mens extremities?
Actually the majority of people are easy enough to control, especially by media through the use of idols and stars. Personalities are created for that purpose.
Anyone on this site who was an adolescent must remember the need to rebel from their parents. At that point, you were most susceptible to the lure of antisocial behavior. Many have grown out of it, others as I have witnessed all too often in recent date have damaged themselves irreparably.

He just might derserve his fame.
Indeed, hip shaking is equivalent to MM mannerisms and lyrics. You are right, we will probably survive it.

Why? Why must we go through this every single time? How is Eminem, one man, corrupting our culture with just words? How does he suck? He has to have one of the most thought out lyrics in the industry. Every lyric falls in place, fits perfectly, and rhymes with almost every syllable.
Who says Eminem can't sing? Ever heard "Hailey's song"? He sings the first two verses and does a pretty good job--better than Nsync.

look--no killing... just his broke experience. A phase most of us go through, unfortunately.
Aiyyo!
This song is dedicated - to all the happy people
All the happy people - who have real nice lives
And who have no idea what it's like, to be broke as ****
[Verse One]
I feel like I'm walkin a tight rope, without a circus net
Poppin perkaset, I'm a nervous wreck
I deserve respect; but I work and sweat for this worthless check
I'm bout to burst this tech at somebody to reverse this debt
Minimum wage got my adrenaline caged
Full of venom and rage, 'specially when I'm engaged
and my daughter's down to her last diaper, it's got my ass hyper
I pray that God answers, maybe I'll ask nicer
Watchin ballers while they flossin in they Pathfinders
These overnight stars becomin autograph signers
We all long to blow up and leave the past behind us
Along with the small fry's and average half pinters
But playa haters turnin bitch like they have vaginas
Cause we see them dollar signs and let the cash blind us
Money'll brainwash you and leave yo' ass mindless
when snakes slither in the grass spineless
[Chorus: repeat 2X]
That's Rock Bottom - when this life makes you mad enough to kill
That's Rock Bottom - when you want somethin bad enough to steal
That's Rock Bottom - when you feel like you've had it up to here
Cause you mad enough to scream but you sad enough to tear
[Verse Two]
My life is full of empty promises and broken dreams
I'm hopin things look up; but there ain't no job openings
I feel discouraged, hungry and malnourished
Living in this house with no furnace, unfurnished
And I'm sick of workin dead end jobs with lame pay
And I'm tired of being hired and fired the same day
But **** it, if you know the rules to the game play
Cause when we die we know we all going the same way
Cause it's cool to be player, but it sucks to be the fan
When all you need is bucks to be the man, plus a luxury sedan
I'm comfortable and roomy in a six
But they threw me in the mix with all these gloomy lunatics
who walk around depressed, and smoke a pound of sess a day
And yesterday went by so quick it seems like it was just today
My daughter wants to throw the ball but I'm too stressed to play
Live half my life and throw the rest away
[Chorus]
[Verse Three]
There's people that love me, and people that hate me
But it's the evil that made me this backstabbin deceitful and shady
I want the money, the women, the fortune and fame
if it means I end up burnin in hell scorchin in flames
if it means I'm stealin your checkbook and forgin your name
This lifetime bliss for eternal torture and pain
Cause right now, I feel like just hit the rock bottom
I got problems - now everybody on my blocks got 'em
I'm screamin like them two cops when Tupac shot 'em
Holdin two glocks, hope your doors got new locks on 'em
My daughter's feet ain't got no shoes or socks on 'em
And them rings you wearin look like they got a few rocks on 'em
And while you flauntin 'em I could be takin 'em to shops to pawn 'em
I got a couple of rings and a brand new watch, you want 'em?
Cause I ain't never went gold off one song
I'm runnin up on someone's lawn with guns drawn
<sarcastic>um... yeah</sarcastic>
