Sounds like he lacked the common sense to avoid a whupping ...never pick a fight with a swarm of worthless trash too stupid to know what is at risk. So young, geez. Part of me totally hopes they throw the book at them and part wishes for rehabilitation of sorts.
I agree, it would be dumb to knowingly do that. And it was wrong for him, IMHO, to punch a kid in the mouth for getting egged. He also may not have know there were several others around. But in the end, no one should die because of a) getting egged or b) getting punched in the mouth.
And if it does happen, like here, they still deserve fair trials. And they don't deserve to be killed instantly for there actions. whether death penalty is sought is a whole other can of worms. Especially when we are talking about a group of kids in this age group.
heh dumb and dumber I guess you could say sums it up pretty well.

yeah thats why they need 1 appeal.
as for the waste of money, we have police officers that enforce a helmet law on bikers, as well as other thigns that all waste money, cant say the cash would go to somethign better.

maming someone for life does not equal the crime of stealing a frickin' candy bar though. and believe it or not, some people really don't like the idea of spending a night in jail. Jail is a deterent for a lot of people.

A night in jail isn't a typical penalty for theft. Usually it's more severe depending on the crime. Ideally, I'd like to se the penalties = the crime. By that, I mean the criminal should experience a similar degree of loss (usually through incarceration) that his crime created. The loss of an arm is in NO WAY equal to a missing car stereo!

different situations. Are you talking end of sentence or while waiting for trial. Also dependent on the crime, much as the punishement should be

It's a lot like the school shootings that seem to flare up every few years. Whenever it happens, the focus is always on the psychology of the shooter, never the REAL causes of the shooting. Usually it's a pattern of extreme abuse and harrassment by other students - combined with a lack of a remedy to stop it. But of course, society would rather pretend it's the psychosis of one rather than try to change the behavior of many.
Which means there'll be more school shootings.

NO, I am just trying to understand what you are saying. believe it or not.
you said you liked the idea of no trial, like the saudi case you mentioned. but yet you say one appeal is okay. I don't see how they fit, thats all. try explaining instead of saying I am twisting your words.
I saw no inference or thoughts of trials and appeals in your first comment in the thread

ok well...im just saying....sometimes we shouldnt waste our time with people. if we know they are guilty. just give em a quicky 1 hour trial, (those kids for instance) and send em to be executed..easy as pie...everyone pays.. for what they did.

I would ask, what is it in our inner cities? Why do kids act like that? How do you let your 10 year old run freely at night on a Sunday night?
There are things that this society never seems to address.
I'm not advocating throwing money at the problem. But for those reading...before you condemn that part of society, ask yourselves what it is your doing to correct it.
Have you ever volunteered for any organization that works for kids? Big Brother? Big Sister? Baseball programs? Football programs?
Your talking about a couple of generation of kids that don't have fathers.
Real change comes when society accepts that we suck at fostering what Lyndon Johnson called "The Great Society."

I agree that sometimes it does end up being a waste of time and money. but what I am saying is that it is worth taking that chance EVERY time.
Wanna get nitpicky? I bet not all those kids are equally guilty. Someone may have stopped after realising what they were doing, but is still lumped in with the group. Do you treat him the same as you do the ones who continued until it was too late to stop?
Downhill? when did mods get intelligent?

How are we to KNOW? That's the whole purpose of a real (non-quicky) trial -- to come to that conclusion about guilt. Police and prosecutors often have motives of their own. You don't want to be on the wrong side of those motives. If you ever are, my guess is you'll be thankful that, through the decades, at least a few of your constitutional rights have been preserved.

Downhill, I agree with you. Here in Stockton I notice that many single parents households turn out great children. However, an equal number of single parent families turn out the wosrt of the worst. What I've noticed with the bad single parent families is that the mothers were both physically and mentallya busive telling their children they were worthless and never going to do much in life. So they thingk "Why even try?"
I was wondering, in this case, where the parents of the ten year olds were? why weren't the kids at home where they belonged on a Sunday night?
This case boils down to the parental roles of keeping tabs on their children. It in NO WAY excuses their actions however. With the degree of their actions though, it can be assumed that they intended to attack someone. Almost as if it was planned out before hand how they would lure the victim into the open as to make him easy prey.

I've never been able to figure out if I totally buy the "don't have fathers" argument. I understand it has an influence, but how much is my question. there are a lot of people who have been raised by single parents that haven't fallen. I just don't know how to read it that well I guess.

This part hits real close to home. Middle of the night I can go out on my porch and see 15-16yr olds riding there bikes and playing around in the street. I don't get that. ANY night of the week, school/no school. They also LOVE to play chicken with cars driving down the street (on their bikes). They see a car coming and just stay right in the middle of the street. Car gets to them has to completly stop because the kids are now just sitting in the middle of the road on their bikes cussing at the drivers and yelling at them to get out of their way. Then they slowly move over and let the car past. A usual weeknights entertainment that is for them
I've got 5yr olds that go flying into the street all the time as their parents sit on the porch and laugh. LAUGH! and yell at the person, who wasn't speeding, that had to slam on their brakes because of the kids. I understand this happens occasionally, naturally. but the parents don't try and do anything about it and blame the drivers. ITS A STREET!!!
My neighborhood is like the poster child for parental neglect and white trash. damn lured in by cheap monthly payments...grumble grumble.
Every thing comes back to one thing in my mind. Accountability. When, how, and why did that get pushed aside in favor of the blame game?
wow how 'bout I morph this thread,,,sheesh.
i'll stop now before I lose track of what the hell I am ranting about.

I wonder if you'd feel the same when it's one of your kids who made a mistake and stole a radio...Or if you were unjustly accused of a crime, (no trial remember)
The kids doing the attacking went too far, maybe they didn't intend to kill the guy, but that's water under the bridge now.
Time to pay for thier mistake.
When and if they are proven guilty.

here's an update on the story. 8 of ten of the kids confessed, still looking for six of them. They're looking at first degree intentional homicide...

Noevo, in an old part of T.O. where I grew up the kids now living in what we refer to as "welfare housing" constantly pull fire alarms for kicks.
The fire dept is fed up, but nothing they can do about it. Every day and night they have to answer these calls regardless of whether or not there is really a fire.
Now, every single unit in the development has a huge fire bell inside the units, checked everyday to make sure they are working.
When a kid pulls the alarm now, everybody has to listen to the alarm (it's super loud when it's in your apt, believe me, I was visiting a few weeks ago and could barely bare it)
The single mothers get woken up every night by these bells, and have to deal with the consequences of the kids actions, but you know, the alarms still ring every couple of hours.......
Go figure.
