No, twist all the positives together and all the negatives together, will still be 12 volts.
Thats wireing in Parallel, if you go neg to pos and then power suplly to pos on fan 1 and powersupply to neg on fan 2 then you only have 6 volts, thats wireing in series

This one would work good also, little higher amperage then the other, but i like the switching on the adjustable on

If you have two 12 volt power supplies and wire them in series, you will have 24 volts.

In parallel, current adds voltage stays the same.
In series, voltage adds current stays the same.

example, 12 volt car battery, 1000 amp output.

In parallel you would have 12 volts with 2000 amps.
In series you would have 24 volts with 1000 amps.

If you wire the two fans togeter in parrallel then the amperage draw would double but the voltage requirement would still be 12 volt, if you wire the two fans in series i think i messed up, voltage required would be 24, oops
I was talking of the two fans not two power supplies, sorry didnt clarify

but if i use 1 power adapter... is it possible for me to get 12 volts to 2 fans? or will it be 6 volts? will parallel or series make a difference? right now im using series...

You need to check it with a volt meter if you have one. I noticed the adjustable one has a polarity switch, so either wire can be positive/negative.

Or you can just connect it to the fan, if the fan spins backwards switch the wires around. BUT, if the fan has an internal regulator circuit, connecting the fan backwards will burn it up.

Put the two red wires from the fans with the black wire W/White stripe together, and all the blacks together, you will have 12 volts,
Polarity on the power supply switched to positive will make the white coded wire Positive on any power supply i have seen, but Roundeye is right, the safest way is to use a tester to check.

My mistake for assuming one would automatically know to check this just because I would.
Thanks Roundeye for pointing that out

my switch has an option that you can see in the picture.. polarity + and -. im putting the red wires from the fan on the inside of the plug and the black side on the outer covering. should polarity be positive or minus? im sure i will just test it when i actually put it together.

With the switch at positive that should render the tip, or center as positive

Look at the fans, they usually have a lable that tells you how much current they draw, in milliamps probably. If they draw 500 milliamps each you will need 1000 milliamps or one amp.

They probably use less than 250 miliamps each, so you should be able to use any one of the power supplies you've shown us.

I just noticed the switchable power supply only has an output of 300 milliamps. Add up the two fans current requirements if it's less then 300 you are good to go.

whoo hoo.

one fan is .12 A and the other is .14 A

thats 120 mA and 140 mA each. adding up to 260 mA

Ampage wise im fine...

i think im gonna do this in my back yard.. but i want a fire extuingisher near by... my parents arent gonna let me do anything if they see me taking a fire extuingiser to my back yard...

This thread has 58 post and 318 views, all eyes are on you bro

Your gonna be ok, it make smoke a bit if it's wired wrong, but I don't think it will just "blow up" in your face. I used to do lots a crazy stuff like this when I was younger, that's how I got into fixing stereos, tv's and stuff.

dont be scared you can put out a fire easy just move the fans then stomp it out no problem. no fire extinguisher needed in the backyard either what are you going to set on fire besides the box? i don think the fans would get hot enough to burn the box either.

^bump^ im thinking about putting the router and modem INSIDE the box and all the hot air would be exausted out the hole. only problem with this is i wont get to see the pretty lights :(

maybe ill make a hole the exact size of the router and modem front.. so i can still see the lights. more to come

what color should i spraypaint it? im thinin black so it will hide away.

here is the final product

Image

that little tissue by the bottom is to show you that that thing really is pushing air... and fast.

the hole may get bigger... there seeems to be some wind coming off the fans the wrong way... and when i lift the lid off the box there is no "backdraft" if you will. a bigger hole will allow more air to excape.. so we'll see
