It is an extension of laws enacted in the past. In NJ, we have seen million dollar properties wrenched from the hands of their owners for highway development for quite sometime. The same has been happening along the Jersey shore. NY developers see relatively inexpensive beach front real estate (compared to the Hamptons) as "gentrifiable", littering the beaches with three quater of a million dollar plus condominiums.
I want to learn more and more to see as beautiful what is necessary in things; then I shall be one of those who make things beautiful. Amor fati: let that be my love henceforth! I do not want to wage war against what is ugly. I do not want to accuse; I do not even want to accuse those who accuse. Looking away shall be my only negation. And all in all and on the whole: some day I wish to be only a Yes-sayer.

sure it's an extension of eminent domain ..with this garbage cities now have broader power to enforce it and with the wealthy developers behind them filling the bureaucrats within said cities it just reeks
it doesn't take a rocking scientist
I've seen evidence recently with Best Buy in building their new headquarters here ... over 150 homes were razed to make way with the city footing part of the bill for them to relocate(Best Buy) ..while at the same time telling said residents ....sorry ..nothing we can do ... hmmm
Offensive

Here in Stockton, they used to have a neighborhood called "Chivo Valley", the area was demolished for the creation of highway 4 connecting the I5 freeway and highway 99.
Also, my cousin was being forced out of a house that her parents haved lived in for at least 30 years if not longer to make way for newer homes, office space, and apartments. What the city ignores is that NO ONE, from outside the neighborhood, would even WANT to live there because of the crime, the park across from where my cousin lives was the subject of a Peter Jennings report on crime and gang activity back in the 80's, by the 90's, the park was "closed" (fenced off with barbed wire and the like)
