In Smalia, we were out manned and out gunned. A large portion of the city was a gun market, hundesds of thousands of weapons with tones of ammo.

Is it jsut as easy to get a weapon in Iraq?

Our technology against theirs, wouldn't that shorten/simplify this battle. I think an EMP would be enough to make them freak out, then we'll have the upper hand(as if we don't already).

Reality Check

Post by reader »

In Somalia...U.S./U.N. forces were sometimes OUTMANNED but never OUTGUNNED. Yes, the Bukhara Market sold guns, but the entire male population of the city had already been armed for years.

The Blackhawks were brought down on 3 October 1993 by an antique but effective B7 Soviet-era shoulder-fired rocket launcher that is an anti-tank weapon. It was partly because the U.S. military was confident the supporters of Gen. Mohammed Farah Aideed didn't have any anti-aircraft rockets that they were flying at housetop level.

Give the Somalis some credit. It was a standup fight. They lost one thousand dead. Earlier, Aidid's entire clan leadership was blown up in a missile attack.

This brings up a point worth considering with Iraq. If the U.S. military gets bloodied in an urban fight, will Washington abandon its goal of regime change in Iraq? Will the job be left "half-done" and Pres. Saddam Hussein be left in power?

If that is going to be the scenario, it would be wise, indeed, for Pres. George Bush to reconsider the military option.
