SAN ANTONIO - A small and rare South Texas earthquake has shaken homes outside San Antonio. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the 4.6 magnitude earthquake early Thursday morning. The earthquake started at 7:24 a.m. and was centered about 50 miles south-southeast of San Antonio between Pleasanton and Karnes City.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage.

The earthquake could be felt in Wilson County, Atascosa County and Bexar County. It was the largest the area has felt since April 9, 1993 when a 4.3 quake shook the area, explained Amy Vaughn from the U.S. Geological Survey. Experts will look over the data, and the magnitude may be adjusted after further analysis. In January 2010, a magnitude-2.6 quake was recorded in the area, the last one on record.

Turkey was struck by its most powerful earthquake in at least a decade Sunday, as a major tremor and at least seven aftershocks rattled the poor east of the country.

Some 25 apartment buildings and a student dormitory collapsed in the town of Ercis on the north shore of Lake Van, the Turkish Red Crescent said.

Local rescuers took many wounded people out of the dormitory, the Red Crescent statement said, without saying exactly how many.

They called for rescue workers, heavy machinery and drinking water, and set up a crisis desk in the capital Ankara.

Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said 10 buildings had collapsed in the center of the city of Van, citing local authorities.

Health Minister Recep Akdag said an air ambulance and several helicopters would go to the quake zone.

Television pictures from Van Province showed rescuers and members of the public climbing over massive piles of cinderblocks that had been a building before the earthquake hit.

Strong quake shakes from Mexico City to Acapulco
MEXICO CITY - A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck in Mexico's western Guerrero state Saturday night, shaking buildings and causing panic in the nation's capital and the Pacific resort of Acapulco. Officials said at least three people died, but there were no reports of widespread damage.

The U.S. Geological Service initially estimated the quake at magnitude at 6.8, but downgraded it to 6.7 and then 6.5. A quake of that magnitude is capable of causing severe damage, although the depth of this temblor lessened its impact.

The USGS said the quake occurred at a depth of 40.3 miles (64.9 kilometers). It was centered about 26 miles (42 kilometers) southwest of Iguala in Guerrero and 103 miles (166 kilometers) south-southwest of Mexico City.

Yeap. They're trying to blame it on fracking operations. We've had several small quakes since they started fracking, which of course, is a big issue with the environmentalists. They've shut down the operations until they can investigate this more thoroughly.

Strong earthquake hits off Antarctica's coast
A strong 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck Sunday off the coast of Antarctica, prompting a warning that there was a "small possibility" it could trigger a tsunami.

The tremor was centered in waters south of South America's southern tip, about 334 miles (539 kilometers) west of Coronation Island and 388 miles northeast of Palmer Station in Antarctica, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

It hit at 9:40 a.m. local time (8:40 a.m. ET) on Sunday, according to the federal agency, and had an estimated depth of 6.2 miles.

Afterward, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center released a statement saying that there appears to be no threat of "destructive widespread tsunami" because of the quake.

But the agency did state "there is a small possibility of a local or regional tsunami that could affect coasts located usually no more than a few hundred kilometers from the earthquake epicenter.

"Authorities in the region near the epicenter should be made aware of this possibility," the warning center added.

HILO, Hawaii - A magnitude-5.0 earthquake and several small aftershocks shook Hawaii on Sunday, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

The quake struck near Kae'na Point in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island at 4:36 p.m. at a depth of five miles, according to a report from the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was about 25 miles south of Hilo and 220 miles southeast of Honolulu.

There is no tsunami threat, the National Weather Service said.

The largest of the aftershocks, a magnitude-3.0, came about 10 minutes after the original quake.

Joe Lopez, 70, said he felt a "pretty good jolt" at his home in Hilo.

Lopez told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser the quake sent books and other items tumbling to the floor.

The magnitude 6.3 quake hit about 15 kilometers (9 miles) southeast of Ica, at a depth of 39.2 kilometers (24.4 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

At least 96 people were injured in the quake, state-run TV Peru reported, citing civil defense officials. Police were patrolling the area while officials assessed damages, TV Peru said. At least one home was uninhabitable and two others were damaged, the state television station reported.

Hotels in the area reported brief power outages but no damage.

A 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the same region in October, leveling dozens of buildings and leaving some homeless.

In 2007, an 8.0-magnitude quake struck southwestern Peru, killing more than 500 people and injuring more than 1,000.

The most serious damage from that quake occurred in towns and cities along the country's Pacific coast south of Lima, including Chincha, Canete, Pisco and Ica.

MANILA, Philippines - A strong earthquake in the central Philippines killed at least 43 people Monday as it destroyed buildings and triggered landslides that buried dozens of houses, trapping residents. Dozens more people were reported missing.

The 6.8-magnitude quake, in a narrow strait just off Negros Island, caused a landslide in Guihulngan, a city of about 180,000 people in Negros Oriental province. As many as 30 houses were buried and at least 29 people were missing, Mayor Ernesto Reyes said.

The Philippine Army said they had counted at least 43 dead bodies in areas hardest hit by the quake, reports CBS News' Barnaby Lo from the capital, Manila. The country's disaster management agency was still verifying the reported deaths.

Lo reports that at least bridges in the region were severely damaged by the quake, leaving them impassable and greatly hindering the search and recovery effort.

The quake, which hit at 11:49 a.m. (3:49 a.m. GMT), triggered another landslide in the mountain village of Solongon in La Libertad town, also in Negros Oriental. An unknown number of people were trapped, said La Libertad police chief inspector Eric Arrol Besario.
