J.J. Cale: Roll On
---

*As an aside for those who may be interested? I use a product called Quiet Lines in my system. Quiet Lines are made by a company called AudioPrism. They are designed to clean up the hash & noise on your a/c lines. Without going into a lot of detail they have been quite effective for me, especially by the digital equipment, namely my CD Transport & DAC. They supply a much lowered noise floor which is very apparent. I also use them for my pre amp. I have one installed in an outlet just prior to where i had my Audience power conditioners (1- aR2 & 1- aR1) plugged in and one was plugged into a second TV which i no longer use so when i noticed it just for the hell of it i unplugged it and plugged it into the other outlet with the one already in it.

I next played the J.J. Cale cd which was new and unheard by me. Well immediately i thought boy is this CD well done. The sound was crisp & very clear with many small details easily audible. Nice.

Then i played the Neil Young CD & it too immediately jumped out at me with its clarity (I'm no doubt wrong here but to me it seems as if the tempo was improved as well?) the product of a much lowered noise floor. I then proceeded to play a couple of CD's i was most familiar with and they too showed the improvements as had the others.

It appears that the combination of the two Quiet Lines in the one a/c outlet have a cumulative effect and a very much improved noise floor. If anyone is using them it may well be worth a try. Very impressive improvements.

This was during the 8am hour when demand for a/c is highest, i can hardly wait till my late night listening as whatever improvements made should be even more apparent.

If interested a review of the Quiet Lines is here. ( I have no financial interest in them in case your wondering)

Levon Helm: Dirt Farmer

Van Morrison: Veedon Fleece

---

Re nighttime listening when a/c power is much improved after 9PM & more so after midnight the Quiet Lines i talked about in the prior post where very, very much apparent bringing out prior hidden or undecernable details in the music. I would suggest a 20% overall improvement in sound.

Just listened to Disc 1 Early Years 1963/68 much in mono. Interesting to hear the youthful voice not yet burnished from usage & age & a band that is using too much sound imho, not having yet learned that sparseness can at times be more effective. There also seems to be a rush to complete the tunes so as to get on with the next one. Just my opinion. 28 tracks on this CD.

One only need to hear "Sugar Mountain" then and compare it to later versions to see how time & experience have shaped this song to a much more emotional experience imho.

Looking forward to hearing this boxed set in full. :)

*As an aside for any interested?

I came across this whilst looking for other items and i too was of the belief that you should keep Analog & Digital separate from one another to which end i had two power conditioners and two dedicated lines in my system, one analog & 1 digital.

After reading this post & reply i thought what the hell, give it a go. Shut everything down and plugged a power bar into my Audience aR1 Single Outlet Conditioner & and plugged my Amp into the closest outlet followed by my Pre Amp, Transport & DAC and fired everything up again. I let it play for 1/2 hr. to warm and listened to see what if anything changed. Damned if there wasn't an overall improvement in the sound. It was easy to pick out immediately.

I had been taught otherwise years ago only to find out now that digital & analog can play nice together. A freebie that works!

---

The Post i read.
====

I used to run two lines to my listening room. One for analog and the other for digital. I was advised early on that this was the best way to go. Recently I have been advised that it is best to run everything from the same line. Both Keith Herron and A J van den Hul recommend this approach. Here is an excerpt from Mr van den Hul's Tips and Hints for better sound:

Power all equipment from a single wall outlet

It’s best to use one single wall outlet to power all equipment by means of a multiple socket mains distribution board. This avoids large ground loops along the interconnects and the power cables. The power amplifiers must be connected as close as possible to the mains input of this connector block. The lower power consumption equipment can be connected to the other end of your mains connector block.

I have read in TAS and elsewhere that you should have dedicated lines for power amps at least. Also, some people say that power amps should not require any conditioning at all.

I find this all rather confusing and would like other peoples views on the subject.

---
reply

I was powering my PS Audio Perfect Wave DAC and transport from my second 'digital' duplex. I had been unhappy with the sound for some time. In a word it was bright. I tried many different things to fix it without success. After speaking with Keith Herron and reading what A J van den Hul had to say I plugged it into my Juice Bar directly behind my power amps. The result was an outstanding improvement right across the board. The bass was a lot fuller and the glare I was experiencing was almost totally gone. I can turn up the volume without cringing. Now streaming from my PC sounds like it supposed to (I think).

As Keith Herron said in an email:
I like to keep everything plugged into the same circuit in order to reduce RFI and other electrical noise.

This improvement was huge not just slight. I wish I had thought of it earlier as it would have saved me some hard earned. Plus it was free.

Re my last post concerning the use of a power strip to connect all plugs for your stereo, upon further listening it appears that doing so has among other positives removed the last vestiges of digital listener fatigue. Wow!!!

If anyone is interested, the Power Strip i use is a Wiremould L10320

This strip has nine hospital-grade sockets hardwired together; however, unlike the power strips available at hardware stores, there is no circuit breaker, noise filter, light, switch or fuse. Any one of these items will drastically reduce the system's musical performance. It has a 6 ft. cord.

Available on the internet anywhere from $50 bucks or less and well worth it. I've seen it at $35 CAN. :thumb:

Great stuff Larry..just last week at the office I was cranking through a few Little Feat tunes from YouTube.
I love YouTube for pulling up some songs I want to hear.
