problem downloading with IE....

Post by Apple McNutFace »

Everytime I try to download a file from IE I get an error message saying this site cannot be reached or is unavailable(or something to that effect). It happens with all files I try to DL. As of right now I'm forced to use programs such as real download and download accelerator to get files. I've tried upgrading to IE6, but still nothing. Anybody ever had this problem before, or know a solution.

Try disabling or removing the download managers you have, also if you could post the exact error message that would be great.

:D ;)

Did you go to their site and remove all the left over registry entries per their instructions?

yep I followed the intructions and also made sure their was nothing left in the registry. The problem actually began before I downloaded those programs. And I got them because IE stopped downloading.

New Window is Blank or Nothing Happens When You Click a Link

Post by DaveM »

This problem was suposed to be fixed with the latest release of IE 6.1. Clicking a link to down load a file, falls into the same category as New Window is Blank or Nothing Happens.....yada yada yada. This means if you right click a link and choose "Open page in a New Window" you again will get the same failure as your download file failures. I'm sorry to bear the bad news, but its a bug and it has an unknown origin, still. Sometimes the new page that seems stalled can be clicked to "STOP" then clicked to "Refresh" and the page continues as it should. Or the link can be pasted into a new window which you manually open. However, if the link to a file or a page is a cgi script, you're outa luck. I don't have any shortcuts to get you to that cgi file or page. Please read the MS Knowledgebase artlicle below.

Also, Windows Update will be unable to Download ANY updates you selected to be installed.

In the MS knowledge base there is the listing of what was fixed by IE 6.1 SP1 and this problem is listed. They have several things to try to cure the error.

The only thing that will cure it is to freshly reinstall your operating system.

No that is not installing over the top of your operating system.

It means the drive has no more Windows on it. And you install Windows from scratch.

The problem is introduced from websites of questionable content. I'm not sure which websites cause this problem to actually occur, but once your IE 6 is broken in this manner, Microsoft has no answer as how to get it running again.

Please see this link provided by Microsoft, It is how they tell you to try to fix the problem, but their final response is "If this doesn't work reinstall your OS.....

New Window is Blank or Nothing Happens When You Click a Link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;281679

"If this does not resolve the problem, reinstall Internet Explorer. If you are using the version of Internet Explorer that is included with your operating system, reinstall or repair your operating system."

Previously I told you about a bug that supposedly was fixed my MS and that if you had this problem, “You Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens After You Click a Link”, that you needed to reinstall your OS. This also affects clicking a web link that downloads a file via HTTP and opens a new window for the download. As well, this affects Windows Update's ability to download files.

I am happy to say that Microsoft has updated their knowledgebase article and added the 7 system files to check in addition to urlmon.dll, which previously was the only system file MS thought was responsible for this error.

Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll

You may want to save this information as it may be usefull.

Please let us know if these 7 added .dll's or the original urlmon.dll correction was able to fix the problem!!!
