2x256 or 1x512?

Post by kabal57 »

trying to decide on what I should get for my asus nforce2 board..
im thinking 2x256 for dc ddr, or should I just go with 1x 512 for now and try to get another 512 later?
will I notice a big difference between just regular pc2700 , or dc 2700?
what would you guys in my situation do?
One other thing, I was told herei n the past that win98 does not manage more than 384 mb of memory well
with xp pro, can it handle 1 gig reliably?
thanks :)

well, if you are expecting to be getting more memory later, i would go with a single 512MB DIMM. there are advantages to getting 2 modules, especially for troubleshooting purposes. but then again, it;s best not to take up memory slot spaces with small increments if you are planning to get more sometime soon. and if you are planning on OCing, a single DIMM places less load on the memory conroller.

i don;t know for sure. if history proves to be the rule, probably not at first (aside from maybe benchmark scores). the rest of the hardware/software industry will need to play "catch-up" first. i think there are some other folks around here who can fill you in better than i on this.

win9x did have a hard time managing more than (if i recall) 512MB of memory. there were tweaks to help this, but if you have winXP as an option, the question is yes..... XP will manage 1GB just fine.

1x512MB. Memory is good enough where high density chips will OC well. DC will not be huge w/ an athlon system..however...pentium 4 systems will benefit majorly. athlon fsbs (even at 333MHz) are easily saturated by 200MHz memory speeds. That's correct, 9x will not work well w/ higher mem amounts..how much can be argued.. i believe much over 256MB and it's worthless. XP/2k will manage almost as much as u can throw at it very well.

ok thanks guys :)
one more question, I have two memory options available to me, a samsung pc2700 512 ddr, or crucial 512, both are 2.5 cas.
Which would be preferable? they cost about the same. I would think crucial with the lifetime warranty, do you guys agree?

i have read of some folks getting really good OCability out of some Samsung memory. however, if it were me, i would go with the Crucial memory. a really good warrantee is always worth the money in my opinion.
