Motherboard Combos

Post by compkid87 »

Well, its about time to upgrade my old pII 400 to a gaming machine... I have questions some people would consider dumb, but if they werent asked, I would never know :2cool:

I started looking at www.pricewatch.com for some motherboard combos, preferrably the Athlon XPs (cheap compared to intel :D ). Then I began looking at the motherboards seperately and this confused me... What I wanted was a mid-range gaming AMD motherboard. If I bought a Motherboard alone, what other things would I have to buy along with it besides the Athlon XP processor and the other hardware connected to my PII MB (ram/hd/video/etc...), something like the cmos battery? Would my PII MB cables be compatible with the AMD MB? Would the cooling fan fit on the Athlon Processor?... I'm confused! Can someone please explain this to me.

Also, What do you guys think about this motherboard? Is it good enough for today's games, also compare the price. Thanks.

Hiya compkid :D

That's a not a bad mobo, but the dragon isn't a good overclocking board if you want to overclock.

You'll have to get a whole new heatsink fan combo for the xp cpu cuz the intel will not fit and is not compatible with the xp cpu's.

Evrything else like HDD's and cables will work. You might want to consider getting an AGP video card with 128Mb of ram for todays games.

Look into a minimum of 512Mb ddr ram. You'll also have to check for the ATX connection of your power supply. Depending on your older intel board, it might be a different plug so you'll also need a new one.

The new board will come with a new cmos battery built right in. It's standard.

Also, you might need a new case. There's a lot of factors that go into building a new rig. The new mother board ( AMD) might not fit in the intel case. You'll have to do a clean install of the os too.

Thanks for replies...

Im working with around $250 for the motherboard and processor. I'm not interested in overclocking (im a newbie at this stuff). I dont mind OEM.

I have a 115v/230v power supply, would I need to get a new one?

I would like the motherboard to work well with my current hardware... but not exceed the hardware's limitations by much.

Here are the specs of my old system:
-XP Pro
-192 mb pc133 (I have 512mb pc2100 ready for the new system)
-32mb Geforce2 MX (I have a 64mb Geforce 2 MX ready for the new system)
-Lan, Sound, modem, IDE HD.

I'm also getting a 60gb 7200 RPM.

Any suggestions for an affordable MB would be awesome! Thanks. Also, where could I find a case that would fit the new motherboard?

Ok. I'm getting the mobo+CPU and I have a question about the power supply since I know nothing about it

The original PSU you suggested is found here (SL450). It seems to be a duel fan 450w for $71 + $5 shipping.

On a reliable( ) Ebay store I was looking at this. It appears to be a 500w duel fan (i think :p ) in retail box for $28 + $13 shipping (buy it now).

Why the heck is that so cheap =p Will it be compatible w/my system? Whats your suggestion with what I should go with considering Price/Value ;) Thanks.

....I would just get everything you suggested... but you see...it's my dad's money i'm spending here lol ;)

Well for one thing, that particular 500w is some fly-by-nite brand i've never heard of. Also it's cheap cuz it's sub sub-standard equipment. The one i suggested is a name brand company and it's been used by ppl who know quality made and it's reliable. You can go with that one if you like, but before you buy it, ask ppl who have used it. I don't think there's ppl here who have used a "achieve" psu before.

You can also go on newegg and look for other brands of psu's.

Raidmax
Enermax
Allied

These psu's are pretty good too. You can search for a 400w psu with these brands and see what you come up with.

You also have to remember that when you buy something like that on ebay and something goes wrong with it, you can't return it for a repair or a refund. You're kinda stuck with it.

At least with name brand psu from newegg, if it goes bad or malfunctions, send it back and get it repaired, replaced or refunded. That's good that you did research on these parts. I understand this is your dad's money and you have to watch what you spend, but would'nt you want quality name brand parts in your rig? Evrybody likes to save some money, hell i do too but i'd rather spend that extra buck knowing i'm getting quality stuff and i know it will last me and just incase it goes bad, i can always return it for a repair, a replacement or a refund.

Don't let me turn you away from buying what you want, all i'm doin is suggesting what I would buy for my rig. Remember, this is gonna be your gaming machine and i'm sure you would want it to last you a while. Not konk out in 3 months.

Check this one out:
Raidmax DUAL FAN Power supply for P4/K7 Motherboards PM-S400 **AMD approved**Raidmax Dual Fan 400W Power supply Specifications: Dual Fans 1 Front, 1 Back ATX 400W POWER SUPPLY UL, CSA, FCC, CE Approved. Model#: PM-S400 Special FedEx Saver Shipping $6.00
$40.00

This one will do nicely and it's cheaper. Name brand psu ;)
