Battlefield 1942... runs a little slow

Post by koldchillah »

I got it for christmas.. Seems like a really cool game but it doesn't run as smooth as Medal of Honor did. I turned down the object detail to like 75% and the viewable distance to 80% and it still runs a little choppy..

Now of course, I have the latest drivers and I tried with video card OC'd & without.. neither prove to make much of a difference.

I suppose this game is hinting to me that I need some major upgrades. I am already in the progress of building my next mothership, but I also want to max out the current mothership as well. What do you guys think?

increase socket 423 P4 from 1.4 to 2.0GHz?
OR
increase RDRAM from 384 to 768?

you don't have to tell me how dumb I am for buying a first gen OEM P4 system because that was a christmas gift my wife ordered for me the very first day Dell released the P4 8100 series. (actually turned out to be the most stable PC I've owned,... yet to see a BSOD after 2 years..)

I would increase your ram to 768mb. BF really needs atleast 512mb to run smooth. Only thing I can think of right now. BTW, you downloaded the most updated patch for BF? (v1.2)

Yeah, I'm sorta leaning more towards the RAM as well.. The processor goes for about $300!

and the patch!..

I totally forgot, Thanks!

Battlefield 1942 used to be choppy on my pc (Athlon 1.3, 640mb pc2100, 64mb video card). It ran MOH fine though... Seems weird, but after a long time of doing everything i could imagine, i rolled back those new nvidia drivers and it ran smooooth... :D I dont know if the driver i had was corrupted, or it was me, but try reinstalling/rolling back video driver first. :p

i also would recommend more RAM. my system had 256MB when i first got it (and had the same choppiness), and when i plopped in another 256MB, it made a huge difference. not 100% perfect, but as Illini mentioned, 768MB would be optimal.

i think it could use more than 512 of ram, i was playing the other day and noticed it was choppy once in awhile and checked system properties and it was using 520 of ram.

i am going to put 1 gig of my mushkin in in a few days when i get my new MB and see what that does.

RAM.....get more RAM. Very affordable upgrade these days.

Don't compare how BF runs against MOHAA....MOHAA is very dated, Quake 3 engine. Any system a couple of years old can run that game. Newer games such as BF1942, and UT2K3, need some substantial systems to run smoothly on.

I have 1gb of RAM in my pc and I've never had any slow downs, choppyness, ect. (heck, it shouldnt with that amount of ram, lol)

Seems like todays games are requiring an extrodinary amount of hardcore resources, and you definitely must have a optimised pc. Just think what Doom3 will do to the pc gaming world. Dont think my pc will even run it and I have a Radeon 8500 :( Oh well, time will tell.

I runs well on my first system (check sig) with medium to high settings at 1024x768 and 100% distance

You GOTTA have 100% distance if you want to snipe or don't want to be sniper food.

I snipe with 100%, watch your ass!

I run it with my 512mb with no problems. At first with only 256mb it would run smooth then stutter a few secs then smooth again. Slapped in the 512mb and it runs smooth as silk.

Not a big fan of it tho that's why i got it up in the classified forum for trade ;)

My friend runs BF on a 1.3 t-bird (stock) with 384MB of Sdram.. yes (SDRAM) his video is a radeon 9000pro 128Mb

the game runs flawlessly with somewhat conservative settings @ 1024x768.. or maybe its 11xx x somethin... either way it runs fine.

Here are some settings I found out there.

Post by Cypher »

1-Go to EAGames/B.F.1942/Mods/bf1942/settings to the VideoDefault.con file search for render.allow.AllRefreshRates 0
Change this value to 1 for less lag.
2-To remove the LONG intro: Go to the Movies and add a 1 (or whatever) to that file.
3-In the game try this:
*Graphics Quality=medium
*Effects Quality=medium
*Environment Mapping=disable for more fps
*Lightmaps=disable for fps
*Shadows=You decide (I disable them and it looks fine.)
*Texture Quality=Set to 50% or less if laggy.
*Alt. Spawn I/F=check it.
*Static mini map rotates if unticked.
*Untick Radio tool tips for more FPS (or togle off with F8).
*I set mini map transparency to 80% (it helps while flying).
I forget where I found these but they help me alot.
I have a P3(866mHz),512 SDRAM and a G4 Ti4600 W/128DDR.

Yeah, it runs fine on those settings but I notice a huge difference in graphical quality. I have the PowerUsers disease of having to play every game at full detail or I'm not satisfied w/ my PC.. My first gen P4 dell was holding its own w/ a Geforce2 Ultra 64 card for almost two years and finally I had to move to the Geforce4, and now more RAM, in a couple of months I'll drop in a 2GHZ socket 423 P4 and this PC will be just about at its cap...

BUT thats okay, because I'm quietly building the SS Mothership V...hehe

SS Mothership V (under construction):

Cheiftec full tower gaming case w/ window & lights & Antec 420W
Asus P4T533 w/ P4 3GHZ HT
1GB PC1066 RIMM4200 RDRAM
NV30 graphics card.. when available
Adaptec SCSI controller
Seagate Cheetah 18GB 15000rpm SCSI drive
WD SE 200GB IDE drive
other parts yet to be determined... will post a new thread when these figures become more accurate.. So far, just the case & powersupply have arrived..
