House rennovation almost complete...some pics!

Post by YeOldeStonecat »

As some of you may know, I have been having my house redone over the summer. A few years ago, I bought a house in Stonington, CT, the town that I grew up in...actually the same exact street that I grew up in...not the same house, just a few down, but was cool to come home to my old 'hood.

Here's the house before I started work:

Note the little gray bench under the rear deck...Ken already claimed that for having beers and sunbathing...swimming in the back yard....and taking naps. Who needs an expensive LLBean hammock anyways! The vinyl benchseat from an old van makes for just a fine and dandy rest stop. The cove that's in my backyard is a salt water cove, Quiambaug Cove, that has access to Fishers Island Sound...some of the best boating in New England. Great cove for water sports, skiing, etc. Can get up to a 20 or so foot boat in the cove....limits are a bridge.

Had a builder chop off my roof, gutt the inside, and add a second floor. House was pretty much entirely redone, all new plumbing, electrical, heating, windows, floors, sheetrock, everything. Even wired every room for ethernet!

Now "ssshhhh"..be quiet, don't tell Ken the bench was thrown out. Hopefully I'll have a deck out back, with a nice hammock soon!

Those of you who know contruction may notice my vapor barrior was put on poorly, and looks wet underneath. That, amongst a few other things, is why I fired the contractor, have a new one starting this week. Grrr......

And...in the driveway...His and Her Jeeps! :)

I noticed the chimney is gone after renovations. Was it originally for a fireplace or for a basement furnace?

I like what you did with the new cellar entrance.

any fish in that pond? lol

Wait a sec after even a close look I've noticed the house is higher. lol

Did you have the house lifted and another floor put in?

Had a fireplace on the rear wing that was a family room, removed the fireplace and chimney, room is now the dining room.

Also the original ranch had a chimney, for the old fire breathing furnace from the 50's.....had that yanked/removed, as the new super efficient furnaces can simply exhaust out of the ground level (note side vent on front right pic of new house)

WHAT THE.....! Where is my bench? :D
You said that my bench was going to stay there! I can't believe that you let them take my bench!!! And WTH! A block wall!!!! You killed my view!!!
Well, sorry, but you are just going to have to have them remove that block wall and replace my bench... ;)

Hey SCat,
It came out great! Definitely worth the wait.
Awesome job on the design! Great views! Enjoy!!! :)

i really like that cantlever trick on the second floor! did you know you can gain an extra 3 feet on the length of each end int this typical construction you can really gain alot of square feet ...

thx for the pics!

* kicks ken outta seat and screams> " GET.. MEAH.. BEERAH BEATCHAH!"

I was going to post a link to that thread, but the SG search results for "bullsh|t" were too numerous

sometimes you have to think outside the box to get inside the box ;).
