need help setting up an FTP behind a router

Post by prohhh »

Hi there!

I'm new to this router stuff, but now I got one and I want to set up my FTP again, but it won't work. I used DNS2GO for a static IP until they charged their customers for money. Now I can't find another service for getting a static IP that works! Besides that I'm behind a router. Could that be the problem?

Happy about any suggestions of WORKING static-ip-services or helpful links and stuff.

Thanks in advance

I use a free program called direct update. I got it from http://www.dyndns.org

Also, you will need to make sure your FTP machine has a static IP (behind router) and forward port 21 to that machine.
If you need help forwarding ports, let us know what router you have and I am positive someone here can help.

Hope this helps.

forward port???

Sorry, don't understand too much about forward port or whatever. Could someone please explain how to do it?
I telephoned with the company I got the router from and they told me that the router is produced solely for them in Taiwan, so there's no specification / model / type.

The only thing I can tell you is that the router is configured via Intedrnet-Explorer, by going to it's IP-address (192.168.7.1). In fact there are many settings to be made but I don't know which ones to change.

Thanks for any help

Typically, a router will act as a firewall by dropping requests from the outside that weren't initiated from the inside first. You need to tell the router that you want all incoming traffic on port 21 to go tou your FTP servers IP.

I don't know how much help I can be but in your router setup you need to find an area that will let you forward ports.

It should have port number, incoming or outbound, TCP or UDP and destination host or something close to this.

So lets say your FTP servers IP is 192.168.1.100 You would forward incoming TCP and UDP traffic on port 21 to 192.168.1.100

Is there any way you can post some screen shots of your router config up here?

You need to forward port 20 also. FTP is a two port protocal (port 21 is the control channel and 20 is the data channel).

if this works:

I entered a port forwarding routine in my router configuration.

ports 20&21 are now forwarded to the right PC in the network, but the config asks me about the "Public Service" with on open typing field. What shall I enter there?

The other fields should be filled in correctly:

protocols: TCP/UDP
ports 20~21
server-IP: 192.168.7.2

only problem is Public Service-field

does anyone know what to enter there?

thanks in advance, I think I neary have it running now

I don't like to forward ports. If you have someone else on the router using a computer at the same time the port is forwarded to your computer, it can cause internet access, and AIM won't work. If you have a software firewall like Norton Personal Firewall, BlackIce, or anything like that put it on. Put your ip of the computer you are on under the DMZ in the router settings.
And there you are done.
