Do you remember when......?

Post by blacklab »

REMEMBER....

When the worst thing you could do at school was smoke in the bathrooms, flunk a test or chew gum. And the banquets were in the cafeteria and we
danced to a juke box later, and all the girls wore fluffy pastel gowns and the boys wore suits for the first time and we were allowed to stay out till 12 p.m.

When a '57 Chevy was everyone's dream car. . . to cruise, peel out, lay rubber and watch drag races, and people went steady and girls wore a class ring with an inch of wrapped dental floss or yarn coated with pastel frost nail polish so it would fit her finger.

And no one ever asked where the car keys were 'cause they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked. And you got in big trouble if you accidentally locked the doors at home, since no one ever had a key.

Remember lying on your back on the grass with your friends and saying things like "That cloud looks like a..."

And playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game. Back then, baseball was not a psychological group learning experience - it was a game.

Remember when stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals 'cause no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger.

And...with all our progress...don't you just wish...just once...you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace...and share it with the children of the 80's and 90's...

So send this on to someone who can still remember Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Laurel & Hardy, Howdy Doody and The Peanut Gallery, The Lone Ranger, The Shadow Knows, Nellie Belle, Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk as well as the sound of a real mower on Saturday morning, and summers filled with bike rides, playing in cowboy land, baseball games, bowling and visits to the pool...and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar.

When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home.

Basically, we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc.

Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we all survived because their love was greater than the threat.

Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, Yeah, I remember that!

And was it really that long ago?

yep! cigs and gas were under .80 cents.
when low riders were 66 Impala's,
Levi bell bottoms were $7,
there was no gangs.
I remember. :)
I woke up this morning, had them Statesboro Blues.
I looked over in the corner, and Grandpa seemed to have them too.

&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbspDidn't it depend on where you grew up in the 1950s as with now? Lots of the entertainment and media images we have from that era were kind of artificially sanitized. I don't think everyone was quite as well-off, educated, and secure as the Cleavers. I think there were a few films that tried to paint a more realistic picture of how many people lived though -- like Blackboard Jungle and Rebel Without a Cause. Even in something like The Outsiders, there were 2 sides of town and they were very different.

Ya but on the wrong side of the tracks you didn't stick a knife in someones back or do a drive by.
You faced him like a man and it was settled with fists. Life was good, kids were allowed to be kids, Hell at 13 I still had a pocket full of Hot Wheels. If a kids went out to the playground today at 13 with hot wheels he'd get the sh!t kicked out of him. Sad isn't it.
When my som was 11 I bought him a real cool bike helmut to get him to wear one, black with flames, well anyhow he gets jumpd by a bunch and the helmet stolen, then they smashed it with a rock and walked away.
Aint it grand to live in this day and age???
I think not

Life without internet and computers was great, you actually learned more, and had more time for other things that were fun

Man, the thought of going out to do a report and not having all the information on my fingertips on the internet is horrible.
LOL, I remember in my freshman year in high school, calculators were not even allowed.
and my computer/video games were Pong & atari space invaders hooked to the tv.

More:

When the cops saw you drinking beer at the playground and told you to hide it from the little kids and nosey neighbors.

When we walked everywhere.

When no car ever was completely filled with bodies, but the back seat held 7 people!

The age of 30 seemed far away and unreal.

Falling in love every other month with a different girl and it did not matter that she never knew how you felt.

68 yr old teachers that reallly cared about their pupils and

getting the same teacher that your father or uncle had when they went to school.

When the Gym teacher would referree afterschool fisticuffs while a crowd formed a circle around the fighters.

Gettin the crap kicked out of you and vice versa, and doing it again and again.

A guy with a tatoo was NOT to be messed with.

Python boots.

Really slim dungaries that you had to fight to get your feet through.

Hursts and glass packs.

Girls traveled in threes.

Saturday matinees that lasted into the evening. (if you didn't get caught)
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

When Penny candy was actually 2 candies for a penny and five cents got ya a bag full.

It was SAFE to go out for Halloween and eat the candy

People went camping or went to the cottage instead of going into Chat Rooms

Ice cream come was 25 cents, double scooper was 30

No one ever heard of a family with 2.5 kids

$75 a week payed for your rent, car, gas , food, clothes and a couple stops at the A&W Drive in

Waitresses at A&W wore roller skates

Roller skating was in and no one ever heard of roller blades

If you had Ape Hangers, Sissy Bars, Red Line Tires and a three speed stick shifter then you had the coolest bike in the hood

Toys were played with, not collected

Hockey cards and cloths pins were your favorite accessory for your bike

A trip to the dump was free, and you always found cool stuff, there was a good garbage pile cause no one ever heard of a garage sale

Hi blacklab

I remember all the above and using a Slide Rule as there where no Calculators, being taught using Pen & Ink and having to fight to use a Ball Point Pen.

Salt Shaker in jeans pocket for the visits to the neighbors Gardens and Apple Tree's. The scrunched up face kids made eating stolen rhubarb & waiting patiently for Water Melon season.

Nights spent playing Red Rover & Hide and Seek. Nudist Colony Magazine & National Geographics latest issue. ;)

Saturdays heading out for the Movies, Lash LaRue, Tom Mix, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, Our Gang, Dead End Kids & Bugs Bunny. Popcorn, Coke and life was Great.

Giving up your seat on the Bus to anyone older than you. Ladies First. Carrying the Ladies bags of Groceries who lived on your street and got of at your stop.

Veranda's & Porch Swings, Hot summer Nights.

Dorsey, Miller, Krupa, SatchMo, The Ink Spots, Ella & The great Ellington, Benny Goodman, Woody Herman, & the love of my Life Billie Holiday who used to break my heart with Her Voice & feelings. Still does.

Tap Water that tasted Great. Wringer Washers and Clothes Lines that bedecked the Backyards of all houses.

Little Woods on most streets where kids could play.

My Dads First New Car a 49 Mercury.

Going to the Exhibition for Candy Floss and spending what little money you had, to buy your Best Girl an Engraved Bracelet & melting as She looked at you with those beautiful eyes.

When Strangers said Hello!

Nice to go back, but maybe someday when we relearn respect for one another again we may yet return to those gentler times.

Lets Hope

regards

....when it was O.K. to pray in school and actually love your country EVEN before some tremendous humbling event.

....when the line between right and wrong, moral and immoral were a little better defined.

....when you could let your kids trick or treat without the fear of drugs, razor blades or pedophiles.

....when your 10 years old kids didn't have a reason to need condoms passed out in school. (better to have them Hot wheels in pocket)

....when little Johnny didn't have to walk through a metal detector at school.

....a Mommy and a Daddy

....and on and on and on..........

But hey, there are many who say we are getting better?
Love
peace
do you what you want
leave me alone
don't ask, don't tell
Maybe he's YOUR God, but...,
Don't pray here!
Get rid of those pesky 10 commandments!
No guilt
No fear
No respect
High times
High crimes
AIDS
Terrorism

YEP! my kids are in for one big treat!

To all who brought back even more memories. Things did seem better then, but in my neck of the woods things are still pretty good.

There are those who want to work on the fear of others and they get looked after. The cops usually get one shot at them, the next time they may have a long walk home on a cold night.

A dull spoon and then talking in a high voice awaits the worst type of offenders. Don't forget many who live in this area are experts at making steers out of bulls.

In a lot of ways things seemed better then, but I don't think I would want to go back. The new technology that is being developed makes every day something to look forward to. I can't really imaging what my grandchildren are going to get to see, but I am sure it will be exciting.

What we really need to do is invent time travel, then we could have the best of both worlds.

 yep, I use to love that sound

it was always a contest to see who could get the most cards on their bike

my brother and I spent almost all our time on bicycles, we went everywhere on them. eh Bro ;)

another fun thing we did was tie some kind of tonka toy to your bike with string and pull it behind you, especially fun in the rain. That was fun :)
