Why does this site load fast?
I just restored to an WinXP point when I had not yet used TCP Optimizer to tweak the TCP Receive number and uncheck the Windows scaling, a la Lobo's suggestion... but the Speedguide.com site still loads fast, even at an average 40 Kb/sec rate which is 56 Kbs dialup modem on the best day it ever imagined. Why is that? Check out a forum such as Creative Cow and see what slow means. Not to put those guys down since they are so helpful. Just curious about this kind of stuff here.
Well SpeedGuide is on a dedicated server running this:
Supermicro 2U SuperServer 6022CB ( Dual Xeon 2.0GHz+ P4DC6+ MoBo, Intel 860 chipset):
2 Xeon 2.0GHz .13u 512KB cache 400FSB processors:
4 ea. original Samsung 512MB RAMBUS 800MHz ECC RAM (MR18R162GMN0) - 2Gb Total
Adaptec 2005S 64bit/66MHz, 48MB onboard ECC cache SCSI RAID Controller
3 ea. 36.7Gb Seagate Cheetah 6th generation 10K RPM 80pin Ultra 160 SCSI drives (ST336706LC):
All running on a VERY fast connection

got a link for that crazycow site?
Also, those forums are CGI based, which is why it's so slow.

heavy duty
Thanks for the rundown on this site. Don't know a whole lot about what's powerful and what's not but I know enough to tell from your list of stuff that that's pretty beefy. I'd like to know, by the way (since I am using 2 x 256 ECC DDR SDRAM on a Tyan 2460 2 x 1.2 AMD 'Palomino' CPU) if that certified stuff... the ECC... and if that DDR stuff is really making a difference for my work? I am self-teaching various 2D and 3D graphics programs, such as Amapi v6, Maxon BodyPaint 3D painting (supposedly a resource hog), Bryce 3D, Photoshop 6, etc etc. I realize that some programs do not take advantage of the dual CPUs (Photoshop & Cinema *do*, I believe), but what about my memory? Is the ECC and the Double Data Rate helping me out? And here's an interesting question: For apps that do NOT use the dual setup, are they only getting 256 mb worth of the full 512 memory?
BTW, I have a 3Dlabs card, Wildcat II 5000. I'm running XP Professional.

actually...
The forum page I go to is
http://www.creativecow.net/rebirth/index.php?forumid=19
and it was always slower than you know what, but now that I have done the adjustments using TCP Optimizer, it seems to load fine, but not real fast.

Mine loads just fine
CreativeCow loads as fast as this site on my computer.
That Crazycow site main page loads fast for one reason, there's very little code to the page.
