Linksys keeps timing out

Post by 911GT2 »

Hello guys, I have the Linksys BEFSR41 and my problem is the connection keeps dying on me. It stops responding for about 10 seconds and starts working again. It stops my downloads and disconnects from irc. I have tried upgrading firmware but i still get the same problem. I have tried firmware 1.40.2 and the recent one 1.42.7. The recent version is a little more stable but the problem still occurs. My connection is a cable modem (static ip). Can someone please tell me if theres a way to fix this problem. Its really annoying. Thank you

I have had this happen to me before, so here are a couple of things to try. When this happened to me, it turned out someone else on my subnet accidentally had the same IP address. Power down your cable modem and your router and have a friend try to ping your IP.

Other things to try:

Make sure your DNS is correct
Try hooking your pc directly to your cable modem and see if this still happens (in case it's not the router)
Last, most major electronic stores have at least a 14 day return policy. Buy a new Linky and see if the problem still happens (only after you have ruled out the possibility of a duplicate IP) if it doesn't happen with the new router, the you know you have a defective Linky that no firmware upgrade will ever fix.

I know its the router because when i disconnect it the problem is gone. My DNS is also correct too. And I cant return the router anymore :(

I wasn't implying that you return the router. I was suggesting that you buy a new one to see if it solves the problem. If it doesn't, take the new router back for a full refund. If not, keep it!!!

That might be something to try. Try to statically assign different DNS servers. If you need to you can email me and I can give you the IP to a public DNS server.

Ugh, me too!

It gets quite frustrating. The only way to fix mine is by power cycling the router (I can't even go to 192.168.1.1 to reconfigure the router). I think I'm using firmware 1.38 (I'd have to look when I get home). It's only recently started to happen too.

Suggestions, input, or feedback anybody?

HHm well I've seen this issue more than once on the boards and I'm still convinced it's not the Linky...I have the same rev. and I've never experienced these issues. Seems like an ISP problem. I have 6 total clients on the LAN (using hub also since it's only 4 port router) and I'm constantly unplugging/switching connections and also clients running for weeks at a time with no IP lease problems. I'd lay my cash on the ISP issue :(

Even though it is a different router, it might be a similar issue, see if you can find something like that setting on linksys.

Good Luck!

If it's the constant internet disconnection you're having, you might wanna try checking your router's configuration. In the advanced tab, enable the MTU settings, and set it to 1492 or 1382 or 1400 or 1450. Then in the setup page, you might have enabled connect on demand, disable it then enable the Keep Alive. Try, this, it might help!:
