Anonymous proxy servers

Im looking for info on public anonymous proxy servers. What do they exactly allow you to do and how do you set yourself up to use them? Any help is appcreciated!

I heard you can surf anonymously through one. Is that true.

I don't know much about the anonymous proxy surfing. I have heard mixed reviews. It would seem to me that it would slow down your connection a bit,, but I am not sure

I believe you are referring to one of those sites where you enter a url and visit it via the third party site.

I wouldn't run through a proxy. It's essentially just caches sites and searches the cache for a site before making an external request (and using more bandwidth). Some provider's use them to decrease bandwidth costs.
