how to check for packet loss

Post by reeo »

I use to know where to check this. Now that I have most of my
problems solved I want to experiment with rwin settings.
I'm at 128480 now, if i go lower to 64240 do I change rwin
scaling to 0 bits?
Thanks in advance, reeo :D

Yes, set Tcp1323Opts to 0 if RWIN is below 65535 :)

Where is the best sight to check for packet loss?
That was a question i had also.

Start, programs, accesserries command prompt type ping http://www.speedguide.net hit enter on keyboard , packets sent, recieved, lost

Also you can use word tracert instead of ping

Make sue you turn off firewall, over places that check ping are here
and here take tweak test with firewall off :) :)

Alot of us test at http://www.pcpitstop.com and since they changed their site around alittle they now add alittle spyware thing, not to worry, following the below directions and you are safe
Compliments Of Dannjr over at Broadbandnuts.
You need to run adaware to remove them out of your registery.
Then you go to Tools on your Tool bar,
then to Internet Options,
Then click on the Security Tab,
Then click on the Restrictive Sites Icon.
Click on the "sites"
Then add these in
*.doubleclick.net
*.flycast.com
*.valueclick.com

Add them in one by one and exactly as they are above.
You may get ad aware spyware removal here:

Lobo.........what exactly does it put on your computer? I wasn't paying attention when the "Always trust blah blah blah..." screen came up. :P ...and I ran Ad Aware, but nothing was deleted?
Thanks!

reeo, the best way to find out if you have packet loss is to download something and install it, if your missing anything, you have PL

That's not correct, as a retransmission will fix the initial packet loss. The best way to check for packet loss is to ping your gateway node and/or your ISP for ten minutes with large amounts of bytes in each packet. You can only control packet loss between your NIC and your gateway, after that, you have no control over it, so it really does not make sense to check, unless, it is coming from your ISP ATM's, then, if you have the option, use another ISP. Have fun. ;)

Doesn't ping use ICMP not TCP/IP?

Well I just deleted TCP/IP in network protocals and now I cannot ping. Since packet loss is not determined by TCP/IP settings, it doesn't matter how packet loss is checked, as it is determined by external factors such as loose wires, bad signal/noise ratio, bad modem, loose NIC card, old drivers, oversold nodes, blah, blah, blah.

Maybe I worded it wrong......

I am getting a lot of "retransmissions".
I went to DSL Reports & ran their little Tweak Tester thing. 100 packets are initially sent, but anywhere from 12 to 35 packets always have to be retransmitted.

I'm trying to determine why my SPEEDS are bad. I have Charter PA's cable service......512kbits down/128kbits up. On downloads, I'm only getting about 40 - 47kBytes/sec. (...at 1:00 AM) I've tried a bunch of different tweaks, etc. I'm thinking my speed problems are due to these RETRANSMISSIONS. Could I be right? Tech Support blamed Zone Alarm. I completely removed Zone Alarm (regestries and all.....pain in the ass!) and have noticed NO difference. Could Zone Alarm cause retransmissions?

So........what is the problem? Why are my speeds so slow?

Another question........Why does DSL Reports recommend such low RWIN's?

Did you ping your gateway with large amounts of bytes per packet? Lets start there.

Hmmmm......don't really know how? This might require a call to tech support. How do you send large packets? What is my gateway address?

Sorry.....I don't exactly know what I'm doing.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE People, IGNORE the BS "tweak test" from DSLReports. This test is based PURELY on internet traffic and congestion - NOTHING ELSE, you can take this test back to back to back and get COMPLETELY different results. Just to a speed test from Speakeasy and use that and other SPEED tests to see if you are getting close to your caps - THAT is what is important (SPEED). :) :D ;)

Mnosteele52, as he said, he is trying to determine why his speeds are bad. He is being capped at 512, yet he is only at 375 at the best of time. I then told him to:

Did you ping your gateway with large amounts of bytes per packet? Lets start there.

Settle down with the DSLreports test, no one has told him to go there. Easy, buddy. Have a good Sunday. :)

DSL Reports is mainly a DSL site while they try to entice Cable users, they always recommend small itty bitty RWIN's, but, wisper, we know better:

It don't get any higher than this:

ALL recommended RWIN values are under 1MB, so there is no way they would affect the PC performance.

Any usable CPU / RAM combination should be able to handle high-speed traffic, however slower computers overloaded with a lot of running applications tend to have slower transfers by default... Simply because there are not enough resources left to fully exploit the potential of the Netwrk card, Winsock and so on.

Still, higher RWIN is better in all cases. The only exception is that when you go above 65535, the header gets a bit bigger, so there might be a slight performance drop just above a RWIN of 65535

If there is high packet loss or latency on the line, higher RWIN is still better, simply because you have the potential of higher throughput...

Just my 2c.

Called tech support

Post by JAGeorge72 »

Okay......I called tech support. The girl was pinging my gateway, and said there is 60% packet loss! .....and that she will call Johnstown (I guess that's where the "gateway" is?) and tell them about this. So.....it sounds fixable!!

She said it was definately NOT a problem with my computer.

She also said that Zone Alarm would not cause packet loss or decreased speeds. I hope that's true, because I'd like to re-install it. You guys agree with that?

Thanks for the help!

Before I got my router I was running ZA and Norton AV without any speed problems.

If you have alot of RAM leave it on during speedtest otherwise turn it off during speed tests as ststed by administrator above :)
