Canadian Tariff Increase

Post by Jim »

I don't think this has been passed yet, but its just a proposal for 2003. Either way, the Canadians have to pay just "that much more" for the same stuff.

Ok, here's the part I should've mentioned.
A tax increase of $1.23 for all CD-RW's, $2.27 on all DVD-R's $21 for each gigabyte of storage on portable MP3 players.

LOL- that'll help pay for some of that "free" Canadian healthcare that we in the US were supposed to embrace !

At least they do have healthcare...

OF COURSE it's not free. OF COURSE it has to be payed for by taxes, but that's the point, paying health expenses collectively and not dividing society into people who can go to the doctor when they need one and those who just can't afford it.

I for one am happy to pay higher taxes, knowing that I'll always have a roof to live under, I'll always have something to eat, I'll always be able to go to a doctor when I need one. Even if I wouldn't have a job. I just happen to like that. It's okay if you don't, but don't bash others for being more compassionate.

And therein lies the different philosophies between socialism and our society.
At least they do have healthcare.

So do we- the finest facilities in the world, with the freedom to choose which ones to go to, and when. Why do you think the Canadians come to our hospitals for treatments and procedures? Because their "free" healthcare system does not provide the diversity and leading edge technology our system does. The latest, best equipment, with arguably the best trained physicians in the world.
I for one am happy to pay higher taxes

I'm glad for you. I prefer not to.
I'll always have something to eat, I'll always be able to go to a doctor when I need one. Even if I wouldn't have a job. I just happen to like that.

Again- I'm glad for you.
It's okay if you don't, but don't bash others for being more compassionate.

Yes- it is OK if I don't... and it's also OK for me to "bash" others for being more "compassionate" . It's part of what makes our country so great. I can say whatever I want, and believe whatever I choose, and back it up with a vote that let's me speak my mind. It's the essence of why we in America love to be Americans.

And as it is your right to speak your mind

Post by terrancelam »

it is my right to speak mine. You are a sicko. Do you think all Canadians come to your hospitals? No. We have the technology and the money, but our well trained people are drawn away by promises of money and other such things.

And though you have the best trained physicians, they work for money. They don't work for the betterment of the people or because they care. It doesn't drive them home in luxury or comfort. From what you are defining the foundation of america, you are saying GREED is the base for it, which I would like to pick your brain over. So your thinking "hey it's okay to bash some over paying higher taxes, I'm rich, they'll take my sh!t away! I better speak up or I'll lose my cash!" Well that ain't the right idea..Its great that you are driven, but you have the wrong backing and motive.

People like you ruin the world with being drive only for personal fufilment. Sure it's great, but what the hell did you do to make you god and someone else a bum? Do you give a damn? No. It's your right as an "American" not to give a damn if someone dies because they can't afford to pay your "world's greatest physicians" their due payment. Its your right as an "American" to make sure that money in your country stays in your country by taking a gun to overseas countries and pointing it in their faces.

Not all Americans think like that, but he is one of the problems. He likes the idea that more money in his pockets is a good idea. But of course, stupid me, it is, isn't it?

Sure he has the right to speak his mind and bash others, but I can't be cause I'm using the word "American"??

BTW tell me if I am lying around that statement you quoted. Do you give a damn about people dying because they can't afford to pay the doctor a bill? Do care if other people dying in another country because it isn't friendly to transnational corporations?

Okay, so now you accuse me of not giving a sh1t because I am an american. THATS WHAT I MEANT BY AN OVER REACHING STATEMENT!!! It doesn't apply to all american's. Thus my problem with you using it the way you did. And yes, I want more money than I have. Shocker eh? But it's not what drives me. That's your opinion, and you're welcome to it. I for one however believe driven people don't ruin the world, but rather they are the ones that further it. You have no idea what motivates me. You have no idea what fulfills me. Nor do I know about you.
You are a sicko.

Been called worse, been called better. :p

He likes the idea that more money in his pockets is a good idea

Yes I do. If I've earned it. I ask noone for anything, and I work for what I have. Period. No handouts- no freebies- no gimme's.
Sure he has the right to speak his mind and bash others, but I can't be cause I'm using the word "American"??

You can say whatever you like- it's your opinion, as is mine.
a little bit of an over reaching statement there don't ya think terrancelam?

Well, his perogative. Interesting how a crack on Canadian taxation / healthcare has incensed you to launch into a diatribe about "people dying in another country because it isn't friendly to transnational corporations?", and "that money in your country stays in your country by taking a gun to overseas countries and pointing it in their faces.". But- passion is passion. C'est la vie.

Then you do give a damn. I don't see a problem with you wanting more money. If your a sicko, then I'm a sicko, do you see my point? We go through different routes to achieve a common goal. Your one of those Americans who isn't just thinking about what is best for him. My apologies if you feel I was giving you "sh!t".

I just get very rilled up when I see someone posting about how he feels he should "bash" others for being more "compassionate" . If wanting to see your fellow man not begging in the street being compassionate, people not dying on hospital waiting rooms, you can say I'm not compassionate.

PS- This is NOT a bash on Canada.... Canada is a great country, and a great neighbor. I visit it frequently, and enjoy it there. I do differ with their socialistic form of government, but hey- it's their country! They obviously are happy with it. I just don't care to share many of those beliefs / aspirations / philosophies.

Geez, I didn't know it was Pandora's box that I opened...

What it all boils down to, is how you look at the world. It's no big secret that US Americans (in general, of course not each individual citizen) tend to look at things in the laissez-faire capitalistic way, while Canada and western Europe tend to look at things from a socialistic perspective.

I try to imagine the long run effects of each, the very long run effects. IMO, mankind will have to make use of a a federal, socialistic, democratic (yes, socialistic and democratic DO go together) government. There are some issues that need top-level, and I really do mean world-gov't, decisions in the long run. Of course, that should be used only when needed, giving the individual member areas as much control as possible, to keep the system as close to the basis of democracy as possible. All other known forms of government will lead to one or the horror scenario, IMO. Maybe there is a better form of government than democracy. But until now, democracy is our best bet. And it should be somewhat socialistic to prevent increasing income disparities. Over the centuries even a constant small increase can lead to a sort of class society with classes to far apart to be able to live together peacefully. But then, those are only the results of the "simulations" in my mind.

We'll see (or won't, depending on how things go), I guess.
