Singnet Broadband ADSl 256/128

Post by lowjk »

Since this morning, I have been trying all sorts of tweaks to improve my connection. I have also tried "custom setting" for the TCP Optimiser, my results varies and do not know whether I m doing the right thing. Would appreciate that you can advise me on what to do. Thanks :(

After Running TCP Optimiser at Optimal Mode:

TCP options string = 020405b40103030201010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 255552
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10222.08 kbps (1277.76 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4088.832 kbps (511.104 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 50 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

What type of connection do you have, Cable or DSL.

If you're on Cable or DSL without PPPoE then your RWIN should be a multipule of MSS (1460). Try using a value of 256960.

If you're on DSL and use PPPoE then MTU should be set to 1492. Your current RWIN value would then be correct since it is a multipule of 1452 (MMS).

my ISP only claims that I am on a unlimited access to the internet at ADSL 256/128. I needed to type in my user ID and password before I can access the internet. I guess that is a PPPoE type right? I am not so sure too......

PPPoE you have to log on to the internet with username and password. (Not log on to Windows)
PPPoE ( Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet ) is a method for building PPP sessions and encapsulating packets, as described in RFC2516. Although it is not a standard, PPPoE is already being used by a number of DSL providers. It requires either routers that have built-in PPPoE support, or PPPoE software to "dial up" and establish the session. You have to log on with name and password everytime you access net with PPPoE.

That sounds like my connection type, by the way, anyway to check from the system or should I call my ISP.

You can adjust RWIN (Default Receive Window) with Optimiser but I don't know about MTU :)

Yes get MTU to 1492 then take speedtest near you from:

http://www.testmyspeed.com/internationalspeedtests.htm :)

How do do speed test
1. The best time is early in the morning (3 AM - 6 AM)
2. Make sure defrag has been run so no files are fragmented
3. Delete Temp internet files, not while testing, but after each test. IE browser, click tools, internet options, click on delete files and no this will not harm system, just get rid of temp files
4. Go to a fast server such as http://www.happypuppy.com and click on 10 demos, select a LARGE file to download (not all of it , just most of it, before you click cancel) this will show you how fast you are downloading, it's not going to be quick except except early in morning when not many people on net. I recommend you go to http://www.analogX.com and download Net State live, run this while downloading as it will give you avg of your download speed, really all you need on Net Stat is incoming data, incoming totals and Local machine, right click on Net Stat anywhere, stactics and check these 3 items, the rest need not be checked unless you want them, all you care about is average. Another fast download site is ftp.lucasarts.com
Put system defrag in scheduled tasks to run everyday.
5. Probably the most important, nothing can be running during test, no firewalls, no virus stuff, no ICQ, no AIM (some of you may have to go into BIOS to disable virus scanner, nothing running except Net Stat live
Scheduled tasks will run disk defrag, 98 & SE in Taskbar, WIN ME in control panel
The people who want speed surfing or doing whatever must close all other programs.

Or if you wish you may go to http://www.testmyspeed.com and do one of the online tests, these vary to much for me but you may like them.

Use speedtest sites at top of page :)

ok after setting mtu = 1492 and rwin = 63888, the testmyspeed results from malaysia was from 17 000 cps to 79570 cps < why this variations. But point to note was that 63 570 cps has the constants hits!!!!! Should I try others rwin numbers to kee at the same figures? :D :D :D

Still need to get MTU to 1492, test says 1500, have you rebooted,
try SG's RWIN or the ones I gave you, they are the best :)

I believe that is MTU of 1500, so you need to change Tcp Recieve Window with optimiser, try these, print copy of how to do speed test, very important you do those things, try and sometimes small RWIN's are better than large:

64240
128480
256960
513920
531440
554800

If I'm not here you may find me here

Good luck, IE open 1 time during speed test
