Better connection after using XP tweaks, kinda...
I did all the twaeks for xp, i didn' have time to do them manually so I used the file. I still got a big improvement. From 4 megabits to 7. But the problem I have is that now my connection is intermitent. When its going its 7 megabit, but it constantly stops for 5-15 seconds for no apparent reason. I play a lot of online games, mainly hosting, so this presents a problem. If I am hosting a Rogue Spear game, we start to load a mission, and my cable cuts out...longer load times, worse pings, and more lag.
If anyone knows of a fix for this problem, please let me know. If I did it manually would that help it any? Also, I did the QOS Packet scheduler tweak, and the system.ini tweak (which didn't help me out any). Thanks for any help!
By the way SG guys, nice job on the tweaks, no complaints about the tweaks except this

Great to see things improved try these things and see if you get any improvement:
Try the following:
Open your Network Connections from the Control Panel – right click on your Cable connection and select properties, if you have the “QoS Packet Scheduler” installed highlight it and select uninstall.
1. Open up regedit.
2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace.
3. Find a key named {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}.
4. Right click on it and delete it.
In IE click tools - internet options - general tab, settings - check for newer versions of stored pages - every visit to page, also set the amount of disk space to use for temp files to no more than 80MB.
Make sure you have the latest driver for your NIC from the manufacturer.
There is a setting under your NIC properties called "media type" make sure it is set auto.
Open your sys.ini file and under 386enh put IrqX=7168 (X = Irq assigned to your NIC).
Download Cablenut from http://www.broadbandnuts.com then open the adjuster and put in the following settings:
DefaultRecieveWindow = 256960
DefaultSendWindow = 64240
InitialLargeBufferCount = 500
InitialMediumBufferCount = 2000
InitialSmallBufferCount = 3000
LargeBufferSize = 2621440
MaxFastTransmit = 2
MediumBufferSize = 577280
PriorityBoost = 0
SmallBufferSize = 20480
TransmitWorker = 32
EnablePMTUDiscovery = 1
GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize = 256960
MaxFreeTcbs = 1000
MaxHashTableSize = 2048
MaxNormLookupMemory = 150000
SackOpts = 1
Tcp1323Opts = 1
TcpMaxDupAcks = 2
TcpRecvSegmentSize = 5840
TcpSendSegmentSize = 2920
TcpWindowSize = 256960
MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server = 99
MaxConnectionsPerServer = 99
DefaultTTL = 64
Leave all other boxes blank, select save to registry and reboot.
Check here to make sure your setting took effect:

The ONLY true test to see if the tweaks work for you is to use them for a while downloading files and web surfing at different times of the day when traffic is heavy and light. You can’t really go by speed tests because the tests aren’t going to change much with ANY RWIN value. If you are getting 90% of your advertised speed most of the time then your settings are right.
If you have the @home software installed on your pc, I HIGHLY suggest unistalling it, they put you behind their proxy settings that won't allow you to change some of the settings above to get the speed you are paying for. The ONLY way to FULLY remove their proxy is click start - run - type regsvr32 /u ahiehelp.dll and select ok, this removes the dll file that limits you. After removing it go to IE - tools - internet options - connections - lan settings - uncheck proxy server.
P.S. Just remember the same settings don’t work for everyone, you can experiment with different DefaultReveiveWindow/GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize/TcpWindowSize settings, good ones to try are 513920 – 256960 – 128480 – 64240 – 32120, there are many, many others to try, use your own just keep it an even multiple of 1460 and if u use 65000 or lower change Tcp1323Opts to 0.
Here is a link to the settings above
http://www.siesystems.com/w2k_registry_tcp.htm
P.S. If the tweaks don't work for you just open the adjuster again, clear all the boxes, select save to registry, reboot and you are back to defaults.
**NOTE** One thing to understand about tweaking all these settings, you won't see a tremendous difference in just web surfing (though you should see some improvement), but downloading files you should really see an improvement.

A box will come up asking if you want to repair or remove IE

Sorry but no, Cable and DSL aren't QOS enabled connections so the QOS tweak will not have any affect on them.Originally posted by dextrous
you know you have to have xp pro to use that tweak right? also, i believe it only helps when QoS tries to send or recieve critical files not all the time. Am i right?
