Bindings with Windows XP?

Post by Alien »

I'm having a hard time figuring out how protocols, services, and adapters are binded under WinXP. I'm used to going under say Win98SE into the Control Panel's Networking Icon and configuring all my network bindings there.

This is how I had my Win98SE boxes set to in the past, and would like help figuring out how I can do it under WinXP.

IPX/SPX-LAN Protocol
TCP/IP-WAN (Internet) Protocol

TCP/IP Binded with:
NIC, Modem, etc
NOT BINDED WITH MS-NETWORKING (security)

IPX-SPX Binded with:
NIC, NOT THE MODEM
MS-Networking
File/Printer Sharing

The reason I had it set up this way is to help increase security by having TCP/IP not binded with MS-Networking ... blah blah blah - I'm sure the experts that reside in these forums can figure out the rest from there.

How can I do this with WinXP?

Thanks,
[ A L i E N ]

Well in XP its not too much different. First off to get to all of these properties you click on my network places and then on the left hand side in the column there click on view network connections.

When you installed XP it should have automatically detected your network connections so there should be an icon for your LAN and your internet connection whether it be dial-up or broadband.

First right click on the properties of the LAN adapter, and then click on properties again. Once there you should see all of the protocols that are bound to that adapter. In XP they use TCP/IP as the network protocol but if you want to IPX/SPX you can go to install->protocol and it will be there.

Same thing for the internet adapter. Go into the properties of it and unchech file and printer sharing, MS network and anything else you dont want bound.

That should do it. Let me know if I missed anything.

Will try and reply!

I'll have to get home after work and try your suggestions .. I poked around in that area and don't remember seeing what you mentioned. I did try to add IPX/SPX as another protocol though, but it wasn't listed in there anywhere ... do you know what directory it would be under on the WinXP directory???

Thanks, I'll reply w/ results soon.

To add IPX/SPX you go to the properties of the adapter you want to add it to. Next you go to to install->protocol->and its listed as NWLink IPX/SPX protocol.

After getting there, the NWLink IPX/SPX was listed, but I can't figure out where to change the bindings ... most of all, after checking to make sure my Workgroup and Computer ID were correct, I realized that I can't share files with my other computers (WinME based).

Any other suggestions?

Oh, and thanks for your help thus far.

Settings>Network and Dial up connections: Right click "Network and Dial up Connections", and choose "Open". On the property sheet, choose the Advanced pull down, and select "Advanced Settings. Under the "Bindings" tab, you can select which protocol to bind to which service, and set their order for each adapter. The protocol has to be installed first though, in the methods described above.

Things get a little more complicated when networking WinXP computers with non-WinXP computers. You either have to make a network disk or you can use your WinXP CD and you have to insert it in the other Non-WinXP computers you want to network. If you run the network wizard in XP it will give you the option of creating a network disk. Then just follow the instructions it gives you on how to run it on the other computer. This will allow them to communicate with the XP machine. If you do not do this, networking will not work until you do.

Since you're worried about security, which is the reason you're taking TCP/IP away from networking services, why are you using IPX then? IPX is routable. I'd use NetBEUI, which isn't routable, it's what most of us here use.

With WinXP...NetBEUI isn't built in, you'll have to add it from the cd-rom in an options folder. It's easy, it has a text file you can read for instructions, basically you just copy and paste two files from the CD to your HD.

you cant bind file and printer sharing to netbeui. You bind file and printer sharing to an adapter like your network adapter. If you click on the properties of your network adapter and file and printer sharing is checked then you are good to go. Just make sure it is not checked on all of your other adapters. You dont want to be sharing you whole computer to everyone in the world.

Why use IPX?

Post by Alien »

I use IPX because there are some rather old games that I still play that use it as a protocol ... I'm slowly learning this gimpy networking setup WinXP has, and everybody's responses have helped a TON! Thanks to all of you, you've given me a push in the right direction.
