TDS-3 Trojan Scan

Post by Norm »

I came across this trojan scanner and it seems to be a very good one so far. It has a demo, or free version, but not all functions work. The registered version would be quite extensive if this free version is any clue, there's lots of options in it.

If anyone can take the time to check this proggie out I'd be grateful to know just how good it really is. Out of the Trojan scanners I've seen so far, this one has so much more to it.

Appearances can be deceiving tho.

Has anyone tried it lately?Find it here

I toyed with the idea at one time, but I think it was the price of it that turned me away. I really don't remember now. :(

Welcome back Norm.
Are they the same ones who issued the patch for ZA?

Hi, thanks Fredra.

I don't know if they issued the patch for ZA or not, sorry.

I got the link to this scanner from another site while surfing, and it came highly recommended as "The best trojan scanner out there", but I haven't much experience with trojan scanners.
In fact I just receently started to use a virus scanner after 20 years without one.

I've always been the cautious type, and it has served me better than any scanner has :)
But with so many people trying to ruin my PC's from afar, I now have 2 virus scanners running at all times, ZA firewall (locked on boot) behind a Netgear router, and NetBUEI passworded to the hilt LOL They'll never get me LOL

I thought a good Trojan scanner was needed as well :)

Paranoid or cautious, I don't know :D

They are the ones that publicized the ZA vulnerability and offered it's patch.

Sounds like a winner, I'll have to check it out myself.

Thanks Norm,

OK....
Just tested it and here are the initial results.
It found a suspicious file in \windows folder...it was put there by TREND, when I used their "online" virus checker. TDS-3 considers it suspicious.... the file name is "PATCH.EXE and TDS-3 tells you that it is from TREND.
I also have "THE CLEANER" and it did not find that file to be questionable.
Hmmmmmmm....with that in mind, can someone else use TREND to check their PC, then run TDS-3 to verify their findings.
PEACE!!!!!!

Just tried Trend again( that's what I used before having installed virus scanners :) )
I also scanned with TDS-3 and it didn't find patch.exe to be suspicious. I did check, and the patch.exe is in 2 directories on my PC too.

Weird to say the least.

Hey Norm
I will run some more tests and let you know. I am willing to give it a fair chance.....the part that puzzles me is that the CLEANER did not find anything wrong with that file....
I am going to isolate that file, then run some other tests to see the results.
Thanks again norm...will get back to you on this one.

np Fredra, I just found this TDS-3 and haven't really used it much either, yet.
I read on one of the config pages a message that stated it may find false trojans while using a certain scan method. I didn't take note though, now I wish I had.

It may find things it sees as trojans, but at least it doesn't pretend that it knows for sure . I'd be a bit upset if I found and deleted some important files thinking they were trojans.
It seems to be a very advanced proggie, so I think I had better learn more about trojans, and scanner option before I judge this one.
I wonder how much more the registered version has to offer, this thing has lots of options already.

TDS (Diamond) not only made the mutex patch for the Zone Alarm vulnerability, they were the ones that discovered the vulnerability and was working in association with Steve Gibson to explain the need for ZA to make a patch... ;)

I have seen may discussions on this prog and haven't heard anything negative...
I would recommend this prog. ( I would really only consider 2 anti trojan progs to be used by me, this is 1 of them...)

I am sure that Croc will verify what I say...

Good find Norm!! )
I took a sniff of my internet connection cable and I detected the faint yet distinctive, odour of fresh and crispy $(US) bills... lots of them. TraceRoute led me to Jandoent's/Ken's computer then here where I found the above offer. What a generous person this Ken is. Thankyou Ken. My bank account details are in an IM to you as we arranged privately. ;) :rotfl:

Now to business.... What Ken said: ALL true.
They (DiamondCS out of beautiful Perth, Western Australia) notified ZoneLabs 10 to 12 weeks prior to going public in accordance with protocol. ZoneLabs chose not to do anything.
A website was created by a member of another forum to push for the patching of ZoneAlarm as well as the efforts of Steve Gibson. That person subsequently became involved in the beta testing of the newer version of ZA.
ZoneLabs then merged/were taken over/got involved with/or whatever, with MacAfee and the new patched version was released.
A frustrating time for most concerned. And the threads; were they long.

The End.

I use TDS-3 and love it. I have noticed only two minor problems that I assume DiamondCS is working on. These may apply only to Win2k.

a) Execute Protection seems to work under an Admin group user, but not a User group user. I was unable to find a registry entry or file relevant to ExecProt that had any User group priviledge limitations that might explain the behavior.

b) Run under a User group account, TDS-3 falsely reported a trojan in WinNT/temp, a folder which a User group user has no access to. Run under Admin privs, no trojan was found. Testing proved that there wasn't a real trojan that only appeared when the user logged in, but didn't when the Admin logged in.

For WinNT/temp issue, I just added regular user read permissions to the permissions list. TDS-3 didn't false report after that.

They have the most amazing customer service, even if you're not REALLY a customer yet (i.e. trying out the trial version)

Whilst trying out the scans, I had an alarm on my little cookie muncher utility, which TDS-3 identified as a trojan. I emailed them the program in question asking them to confirm, and got a response within a couple hours, apologizing for any inconvenience and verifying that it was a false alarm (some string in cookie muncher was very like a string in one of the theef trojans.) They had adjusted the next radius update accordingly.

It IS expensive. However, I am so impressed with the quality of the program and the attitude of the company I think I will be purchasing it in the future.

Just my 2 cents. :)

Got to this thread while doing a search for TDS-3 related threads.

So Norm, did you use the program? How was your experience?

wow, old thread walking.

I never did buy it. No other reason than I LIKE FREE STUFF :)

Trojan scanners check for web access capablity in files, so you will see the odd false positive as it 'warns' of programs that autoupdate etc.

TDS-3 is still around, and after a couple of years since this thread was started, I'm sure it has improved. I haven't been using it, but still hear good things about it.

I recently heard about it and did a search here at SG and found this thread. How does this compare against other trojan detectors such as pest patrol and trojan hunter?

Norm, what is the best FREE trojan detector out there?
