Does anyone have any problems with thier DSL line?

Post by onetrueday »

I've been using cable for over 2 years now, and I cant take it anymore. I lose my connection at least twice an hour and since i'm a heavy downloader this is really starting to make me VERY mad. I'm considering switching to dsl, but I'm curious if anyone has had ANY problems with dsl? I'd rather have slower speeds and stability, although right now I have niether.

I had Verizon ADSL for about 6 months. It was horrible.

I canceled that service, went with a Covad reseller. Since then, I have not had an outage in 14 months.

I think whether or not you have problems with DSLdepends upon your ISP, the CLEC and ILEC, distance from CO, connection protocol, etc. etc.

The thing you are 4700 feet from is called a central office or CO for short. I have had Verizon DSL for 18 months. After a rocky start, the reliability is much improved. Dropped connections are rare now. The throughput, which had been around 500kps has dropped to ~250 for the past few days. This is reminiscient of last April and May when the same thing happened. They always assume it is your equipment which is the source of the problem. However, it got better over night and they never admit they fixed something.

I have had DSL for 7 months and have had 1 hour of downtime! I'm 3900 wire feet from the CO, I'm also in NYC. I'm in Queens, some people in Brooklyn have had problems but My speed is consistent at 503/82 with the 640/90 plan. It really depends were you are located. I can say nothing but great things about Verizon and there technical dept.:2cool:

Wow, considering how many people have trouble like me with thier cable lines... perhaps it is time to switch to dsl. I like the option that if I want more speed, I can just buy more with dsl.

I can seem to find very many horror stories with DSL via verizon.

I have been a customer of Covad for over a year. They only filed Chapter 11 recently. The bankruptcy filing is a reorganization that will, according to reports, give them enough cash to last through 2003, at which time they hope to be cash positive or purchased by another party.

Since it appears at this time that Covad should be viable through early 2003, I am OK with the way things are, and I will stick with them until or if circumstances force a change.

Either way, before I go back to Verizon, I will stick with dial up and wait for cable.

Visit this sight http://www.dslreports.com/comment/552/5758?185 for a taste of my experience.

Of course, your results may vary.

Covad going down, up with Verizon!

Post by HackMcDivot »

All of that sounds really screwed up to me! First of all I have 640/90 and pay $39.95. My speeds are consistently 503/82. Paid nothing for the Modem and software. Have been down for 1 hour in 7 months. Everytime I have called Tech. support they have called me back! I am also 3900 wire ft. from my CO. So from my point of view, Verizon can do no wrong! I really dislike cable because the only way you can get a good deal is if you get their video portion of the package. And from experience the cable signal really sucks and is always screwing up. I have Direct TV for Video viewing. Oh yeah, I got a PC Cam with my DSL deal! The camera isn't too good, but I got it.

If it helps any I am an Installer/Repair person for Ameritech(SBC)
in Indy DSL is only part of my job. On the outside loop up to the Demark. Seems like I do more installs then repairs. When we do
vender meets on repairs its most of the time in the CPE side. We put a ton of them in once there up and running custumers love
them. But I have a Cable. I am waiting for them to cut us a discount and I may switch my self. My Dad 33 years with bell
gives me hell over having cable.

I have GTE DSL(Verizon) for about a year I think or more and haven't had any problems. Only problem I have is that my brother is paying $50 a month for 768/128 and downloads are at like 50kbps and up. I don't know how far I'm from my CO but I know where it is located but don't know if that's the one we're connecting to. It has Verizon on the building.

Wierd onetrueday, Mine has been fine. Cant complain, fast speeds, low pings. Only bad part is it goes out for like 5 seconds about every 2 hours which boots me from online games. But I can surf and surf and surf or download for hours with no problem.

NorthPoint also said the same thing right before Liz Fetter finally admitted that the network was going dark. CLEC executives find it more profitable to run CLEC's to the ground and liquidate them instead of trying to save every penny there is to be made.

dsl is trash in my opinion, i first got dsl and was maxing out at 40KB/s, and the line quality was horrible, everytime it rained i would lose service, and the phone company refused to believe it was a problem with their line, so i ditched them and got @home, now i max out at 600KB/s

Good for you I'm glad you found something better. Whatever the hell you've got now, I hope you're happy with it. Because to me their is nothing better than Verizon DSL. I have had it for 7 months and been down for a total of 1 hour! I'd say that's pretty good. So I hope you're new magic connection has that kind of track record in 7 months. Bye :rotfl:

I see you're from the North west, where, Washington state? They only give you 2 choices up there? Did you try working out this problem with the DSL company? I had a few problems with my system and I called Verizon (my ISP) and they helped me out immediatley! Who is you're ISP, Pacbell?

Hi OTD,I have cable, and I am only replying because I have @home.sucks and I experience the same things you do,it is pretty bad ,,,huh?!?!?!?!

but verizon dsl here start at $50 a month for 284 down or something horrible like that, and I only pay 34 a month now,but for 3 months it's been free because it's been so bad I complain almost everyday, and they have been refunding my charges. :p

anyway,,I am with you....

have a good day...Dan

I'm really so sorry to hear that because I have Verizon DSL ($39.95)and it is the most reliable service I have ever encountered! Really, this thing is never down, always consistent speeds. It really depends where your located to the CO with this DSL thing. CO is Central Office where the signal is amplified or originates, not sure.

i'm in missouri, not washington, and i tried several times to get the phone company to believe there was a problem with the line, but they wouldn't, so they got the boot. and even if you do get good reliable uptimes most of the time, i think $40 a month for a crappy 180KB/s max line is a waste of money, unless of course that's your only option

My speeds are 640/90. Any thing that is 10 times faster than 56K is good enough for me. What do you want, the fastest speeds on the block? Unless your a heavy duty gamer or really fast downloads are important to you in keeping ahead in your field, then all these super fast speeds are all just for braggin' rites. 503/83 is just great for me! You know the faster package you order, the more money it's gonna' cost you. So I've got 640/90 for $40.00 and lets say you get 1500/450 for $60.00. Your happy payin' $60.00 for those speeds? Look 56K sux, if I can get something that's 10x faster for $40.00, I'm happy!! :rotfl:

WTF???

Post by crazyjw1971 »

Whats up with all these people that are less than 5000 feet from the c/o and getting THE EXACT SAME SPEEDS that i get? Hmmm... If I was y'all, I'd raise some hell!

Hey OneTrueDay! Umm... After playing online games against A LOT OF PEOPLE WTH CABLE and seeing them go super-laggy, I might stay with Verizon DSL after all. ALL OF MY FRIENDS in the DC MD VA are that have @home (Comcast) are complaining about the EXACT SAME THING. My DSL has been pretty much rock steady for a while now. Imma still try cable for 30 days free though. :D

The ping times that I've seen from some of my cable buddies lately plain sucks! Even in the middle of the night when everyone else is sleep.

I'll make my final determination when Comcast finally brings @HOME to my node.

just got my dsl fixed, they had to switch my server, but it was like pulling teeth out of a hungry lion to get the truth out of them, one of them made the mistake of telling me that they could try another server, and i got on immediately and it was great, i have retweaked and used the false ip address gag, so my dsl is smooth as silk now. lets see if it lasts the weekend.. :rotfl: don
