Need Serious Help tweaking my DSL!!

Post by white_lightning »

Here is the TCP analysis:

TCP options string = 0204052a0103030201010402

MTU = 1362
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

MSS = 1322
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1322, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
507648 (MSS x 48 * scale factor of 8)
253824 (MSS x 48 * scale factor of 4)
126912 (MSS x 48 * scale factor of 2)
63456 (MSS x 48)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 54 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

I've tried to change the MTU but nothing seems to work. I'm getting 500-700 kbps at dslreports. This is supposedely a 1.5 mbps DSL.

Thanks!!

click on my sig where it says speedguide patches. Get the one for your connection and os. then come back and post your results.

here are the results from the recent patch. For some reason, my MTU is not changing. The patch supposedly tweaked my settings for broadband, but it's not saying it has. I installed the patch.

white lightning,

find one of Lobo's posts and follow the link to his help page, find the part about DSL stuff and read that... he has some help there for MTUs that won't budge with a DSL connection.

I had the same problem with my MTU staying down after I patched, it was my PPPoe software overiding the registry settings and I had to go in and change a couple things manually, mainly the MaxFrameSize.

Just thought you might have a similar thing happening.

you need to use reedit and use the find tool.
your looking for the 1362 value it will pop-up what you need to change to 1492

IT WONT CHANGE

Post by white_lightning »

For some mysterious reason, the value will not change to 1492. I've tried to regedit and still, it will not stay.

TCP options string = 0204058601010402

MTU = 1454
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

MSS = 1414
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1414, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 63888
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
520352 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
260176 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
130088 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
65044 (MSS x 46)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2555.52 kbps (319.44 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1022.208 kbps (127.776 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 38 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

we got the MTU looking better but not there yet. did your replace all the listting of the value 1362? if not do thing. if so try looking for the new value that is showing as MTU 1454 and replace all the listed one with the value 1492. if that still not working I'll be around.

Still wont stick

Post by white_lightning »

this is frustrating. I've gone into the registry and control pannel to change the MTU and it never sticks to 1492!!

Out of curiousity, what sort of improvements will I see should we set my MTU to 1492?

it hard to say, just how much, but if you do end up not getting your MTU up there just remeber to keep your RWIN's value a multiple of your MSS.

Ok, set your MTU to 1500 and MSS 1460! RWIN set to 32767. TTL set to 128. Email me, redxii1234@aol.com, if you want more tweaks.

DSL is not a 1500 MTU but it is a 1492 cMTU get rid of Winpoet and goto either RASPPPoE or Enternet 100 the only thing about Enternet 100 or 300 is that in order to get it to 1492 you will either have to edit the INF files prior to installing or set it manually in the registry. Winpoet will keep you slow..

This page will explane how to get your DSL up

On the RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits of the analyzer. How do you get more bits?
