Accuracy of PCPitstop tests

Post by Epiphany »

My ISP says my maximum speed for my DSL should be 960/120. The bandwidth tests at PCPitstop repeatedly show higher results. The lowest is 1374/131.

At that site, they say the results can be inaccurate but it sounded as if they should be on the low side rather than the high side. I did all the tests they had. Is there another good site where I can test?

I tweaked the thing last night but I'm not even sure whether the patch installed properly...

Do you have a recommendation for another place to test?

About where are you located? Speakeasy.net has ,what I find, to be the most accurate tests so long as you test from somewhere near your location. I have found their upload speeds to be off, but downloads are pretty much on the money! ;)

Pick a close location flavor:

hehe:Your download speed : 5139815 bps, or 5139 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 627.4 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 117647 bps, or 117 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

I like speed tests too but the true indicator is a file download and file upload. I think the speed tests are good indicators to see if you're tweaks are in place and working. But the true guage is to download a good sized file and see what the transfer rate is

I'm around Toronto. (That must be close to SOMEWHERE...)

I tried both links xbit gave me... speakeasy said 967/132, the other said 254/111 :( I'm supposed to have max 960/120.

That's a good idea to try some good-sized file downloads and see how that looks.

These are really great forums; I'm happy I found this place, have been reading and learned a LOT already. Thanks.

These test arn't always accurate. Try diffrent places or just download a file and look at your speed.

Later that day...

Post by Epiphany »

Okay, well, I downloaded 3 big files, all showed 119Kbps. So I'm happy with that. I don't think I ever had one go above 90 before tweaking. Haven't tested uploads yet but I'm not so concerned about that.

Um... I'm right that 119Kbps is better than 960 kbps, aren't I? The test sites use k and the IE download window uses K and I'm not a math genius... I have a feeling I've got the b or B wrong but I swear I keeping reading about this and never quite get it...

same speeds..browser will report in KB or Kilo Bytes per second...speed test sites will normally report Kb's which is Kilo bits per second...Speakeasy sites show both bit rate and bytes. just look at my test results..

Yup, been staring at this for quite a while... I get lost where 5139 kbps becomes 627.4 k/sec but I think that's the binary/decimal thing... no worries, I'll figure it out eventually. My confusion goes way back to my "56K" modem ;)

Thanks.
