Hi.

Ok. It has been a 3 year debate with my parents to try to get broadband internet.(I stoped asking for awhile thanks to good ole Winfire ;) If you don't know winfire..dont' ask...it brings up bad memories)

This the deal...i found dsl service w/ pacbell for 37.95/month.

Now my dad is very willing to subscribe...but i have to create a "proposal"

I was wondering if any of you guys could help me w/ this proposal. I need to make them think they can't live with out it.

(of course w/o mentioning that i'm going to be gaming like mad ;) )

So please...just throw out any ideas u guys have on this proposal. Basically a sales pitch :)

It will basically be toughest convincing my mother who is not too computer oreinted(oh she does do stock trading though...maybe internet can help w/ that?)

Please help, thanks a lot guys

You click its there, you download its done.....

No to mention that if you were to compare speeds relative to prices the DSL gives you much more bandwidth for your $

Gohan i had to do the same exact thing, but it was during christmas, i annoyed every day for like a month, and they had a readl good offer for it. I ended up aying 20$ a month for it, butit ok. If u have a 2nd phone line, tell then u will disconnect it. That alone cost 20$ a month, and Your ISP cost around 20$$ pr less. So basically it is the same proce. You should tell them taht. Tell them also that it helps you learn by not having to wait. and if you have siblings, tell them that you will network it so all people will have the service. All i can say is good luck, all your hard work will pay off

Tell them that while they grew up in the 20th Century, you are growing up in the 21st century, and that they are the one who should adjust.

BTW I was born in the first half of the 20th century.

I see no reason not to get it, for me, I just went and got it, since I pay for it myself.
look at the benefits.

SOOOO much faster than dial up, you can't even compare it.
you click its' there, you download, it's done, just like PING said.

the second phone line deal is the main selling point for me. as I only had one phone line, whenever I was online, the phone would be busy, the cable solved that. so right there, you save time and frustration, or money, because you can disconnect the 2nd phone line.

it's just so much more productive. for one thing, I woulnd't have a 1/3 of the crap I do now, just since downloading is SOOO easy now. and researching stuff online takes minutes, instead of minutes of waiting just for one page to load.

and at 37 bucks a month, it's not much....you figure at $20.00 per month for a qood quality ISP like Earthlink or something, and you pay $40.00 for a cable/dsl service, you get like 10-50 times the speed, if not more. so right there you getting a hell of a lot. They'd be foolish not to get it.

YOu said how you mom isn't very compter literiate, or at least doesn't do much internet stuff...once she gets the power of broadband, the internet will be at her fingertips!!

Do you currently have dial up with one phone line in the house? If so, you're arguement is easier. When you're online right now, with the dial up modem, nobody else can call out or receive phone calls....busy signal!

With DSL...one phone line.....DSL on all the time, but since it uses a different frequency on the phone line, the plain phone will be able to work normally, make and receive calls. No busy signal for your mom or dads friends trying to call, no picking up the phone to make a call and hearing your modems squelch when you're on line.

With cable, same results as above, since it's on your TV cable, not the phone line.

Plus a good learning experience about computers, NICs, networking, etc....all of which any kid should learn these days to bring you into this lucrative although frustrating job field.

Look at the situation from their standpoint. What is important to them? Discover that, and you can manipulate them to your liking.

simply put...MONEY TALKS! use the cost savings as your angle.

5KB sec for $20/month or
600KB sec for $40 or less per month

it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.

seems like the promise of not having the phone line tied up with the internet should be convincing enough, just mention how much a second phone line costs, about $80 for setup and $30 per month in our area (add $30 plus what u pay for dial-up and you probably get $50 or so) and they should jump at the chance.

1.) the phone line is not tied up
2.)if you got a second line soley for the internet usage it will cost less

3.)researching can be done A LOT faster (I usually take about 15 minutes maximum finding my information)

4.)Always-On (unless it is PPPoE DSL...lol, which needs to be logged in)

5.)no waiting 3 hours for your download to finish

6.)your parents learning curve if they do not know how to use a computer will not be steep

7.)gaming will be much better on broadband than dial-up (unless the provider happenes to be Verizon..LOL)

8.)you can have multiple computers on if the service is fast enough

**If you are going to have a LAN behind a NAT router be sure not to get the linksys router as of right now. They seem to have fixed their downstream limitation problem but the upstream is choked (most of you will not notice this unless you got 1Mbps+ uploads but if you do this can cause a lot of problems especially when serving a game on your connection).
