ok guys

when i boot my puter up i notice six c:\ as below,when i open my autoexec.bat file it is not there,but i found them in autoexec which is a ms-dos batch file in my root dir

i first notice them after installing mcaffe then reinstalling about 4-5 times with no luck also giving me blue screens,when i noticed it was also a resource hog i decided to trash it,cleaned it off my system totally included register entrys, i use innocolateit now,seems to work well

is there a way to edit this file somewhere to get rid of the six c:\ in my boot up,i know its probally not hurting anything but just would like to get rid of them

Click on Start/run/type"msconfig"/it's in either "config.sys" or "autoexec.bat" tab ( been a while since i did this) then you can edit all those c:\.

Delete everything in your autoexec.bat.

Geez why do want to run antivirus that bloated? Mcafee does install 6 files on your system, you can find them in the startup tab from msconfig(c:\programfiles\networkassoiates\mcafee). If you don't want to see them turn the echo off(you'll need to add a line at the front of your autoexec.bat in msconfig) and its gone(but there). Mcafee is a huge resource hog. If I may suggest, try inoculateit. Its free, small and does a very good job and updates are free. Don't get me wrong it does a very good job but it steels from the very thing this site is about, SPEED.

. I'm not joking, a few months ago autocad2000 gave me the same problem that you have and that's how I fixed it. Right now both my "config.sys" and "autoexec.bat" are empty and have been empty for a few months and everything runs fine.

well if i did that wouldnt my drivers for my sound blaster not load therefore sb dosen't work????????

Of course your sound drivers will work!!!! What you are seeing are the dos base drivers loading. Do you use dos? You can turn off autoexec.bat and config sys in msconfiig and it will oad just fine. If you get an error just modify the autoexec in msconfig with a emm386 noems and your done.

all that might work but it really doesnt get to heart of the orignal problem which is being able to edit the file where these six c:\ are and take them out for good

my autoexe and my config are empty. If I remember correctly, they are supposed to be empty anyway. why would you continue to reinstall a file six times? you are asking for trouble when you do something silly like that. Do you have a cd burner? Do you partition your drives? If you answered yes to both of those questions, why are you wasting computer power with an antivirus? The last two virus's I caught, nortons never even saw. I still install it, but I dont leave it running. If you download something you're unsure of, run a scan on it first. Otherwise dont bother. as far as the multiple C: things... what's the problem? If you're suffering from blue screens on startup, that's a conflict. Go to msconfig and ONLY leave the following checked:

scanreg
systray
your firewall

That's it!! nothing else has to run. If you see something from soundblaster, guess what... turn it off! it doesnt do anything! Your computer will run a whole lot better.

Have you even tried clearing your config.sys and autoexec.bat yet? Cause I had a few C:\ and those went away when I cleared it.

1.- go to start \ run, and type sysedit. This brings up autoexec.bat; config.sys; win.ini; and system.ini. Make changes, click file \ save.

2.- or, run edit from a command prompt. Go to dos window, and type edit c:\autoexec.bat etc., etc.

Yes, you can eliminate the "c:\"s, but don't eliminate the sound blaster entries, as your sound may stop working. However, these may not be necessary for sound in Windows, as they are dos environment settings. you can experiment by placing the three letters "rem" and a space in front of all entries, and try booting. This prevents them from loading. These may be dos mode only settings, for games, etc.

Give it a try eliminating them with the "rem" statement, and see how it works. If it doesn't, just edit the file again, remove "rem" from in front of each line, and re-save.

Windows cant boot up everything I have to have dos boot my video. Or it looks like i m in safe.

Be crafeful messing around with thoses. Yeah u can del eveything in them and u should be fine. But that also depends on what you have on your computer. if window boot something that needs to booted in dos frist like a RAM drive(found that out the hard way) windows wont open.

But most thing you dont have to worry about

well in msconfig i just unchecked the three boxes which did not contain any c:\ and rebooted,no c:\ on startup,but when i go sysedit my autoexec.bat looks like this mmmmmm!!!!!!

hey norm

i think your right because when i take out one of the two entrys thru msconfig and reboot one neede the other so it still loads sb drivers and when i take out two of two entrys i dont see the c:\ on reboot

do you think if i unistall and reinstall sb files it will take care of it???

also is it a posibilty that its reading some old register entrys keys in my register doing this

also there are no skiped lines in my autoexec.bat as far as i can see

Best thing, just live with it.
Second best thing, uninstall all your soundbalster software, use a registry cleaning program like System Mechanic. Then reinstall your soundblaster software, but without the Dos driver this time.

Those c:\>'s you see at bootup are blank lines in your autoexec.bat file. Check it out. After the last line in the Autoexec file there are empty lines, but if you try to delete them, they just reappear on the next boot because the auto file is rewritten.
It pissed me off too, so I didn't install the soundblaster software. I just installed the driver for the card, not the dos driver though. if you play Dos games, you'll need the Dos driver. it's up to you and what you need i guess.

Best thing, just live wih it, it's not hurting anything, just an annoyance that's all.

If you just rename the file, you can always rename it back if you have problems.
Like I said earlier, i had this problem too, and worked on it for hours, finally giving up and removing the SB software altogether. Then just installed the cards driver, no software. All my sound stuff works fine too. I even have one game, Star Trek game similar to Q3 and the sound in it works fine.
That SB software is real bloated, and I don't really play with sound suff much, so the driver was good enough for me.
