An intro thread

Post by Syklops »

Hello to all!

I am a noob, and while this site does not require an introduction, posting one is just good manners, in my opinion, so here's mine!

I have been on many discussion forums over the years, but I've been away from it for some time. I was quite happy to find this site, which appears to be very active and has some great history. I look forward to making a few new online friends here.

I'm a woman, I will be 46 in a few weeks; I'm a Mom to a wonderful Son and just a little over 4 months ago I became a Grandma. WOW what a crazy feeling it is to say that!
I enjoy riding motorcycles, (that's motorcycles; full-sized, comfortable bikes that aren't just meant to go super fast in a straight line, like crotch rockets), I was a veterinary technician and a bartender during my working years, and I am now disabled thanks to a drunk driver who almost killed me while I was riding. (Yes, I still ride anyway.) I am a bow hunter, I love to ice fish, play pool, I read as if I'm addicted to it, (I probably am!) and I love great conversations; either in person or here online with other intelligent people.

I'm posting in size 3 because I lost my right eye in the motorcycle wreck (hence my screen name) and larger font makes it easier for me to read. If it is annoying to anyone, please, let me know and I will shrink my font and make due. Bad ju-ju to start off in a new place being annoying!

I love to bake, and I "invented" an oatmeal, peanut butter and chocolate chip cookie that is a huge hit with my friends and family. Does anyone here bake and share recipes?

Politically, I am very right wing, but I don't consider myself Republican. If you must put a label on me in the political arena, I consider myself a Constitutionalist. I am seriously opinionated (who isn't, right?
;) ) and my opinion about the current choices for the next leader of our once-great nation is they are total garbage and us Americans are completely screwed, whichever way it goes.

This is all just for starters! I look forward to "meeting" everyone!

Nice to meet you Skylops :)

If you feel like sharing I think my girlfriend would love your cookie recipe :)
Love to cook, not baking per se but...good food regardless of how prepared.
Lasagna, pesto, salsa, baked tofu, curry shrimp, smoked salmon pizza, stuff like that.
Very left wing, but I don't consider myself a Democrat.

"Welcome!" and nice intro....you walk into a bar doing that and people are likely to buy you a drink right away.

What do you ride? My current project is an Evo vintage Harley Springer ...grooming it to a David Mann style. Prior bike was a Shovelhead FLHS, prior to that was a FXD I groomed into an old SuperGlide style. Wife has a Sporty 1200C..but she's pretty much stopped riding so selling it. I didn't ride in the middle years of my life, but earlier on..started as most of us did back then..on smaller bikes, 400 and 650 size. Unlike today where noobie riders go rush out and buy 1000+ size rides and kill themselves cuz of too much power 'n speed.

Also a fellow cook, I don't bake, but I'm big into cooking. I started a thread many years ago, the Official SG Cookbook. When I get to my office I'll try to find it and link it here. Dan (above poster)...is also a big time cook, and makes his own great dry rubs (I can testify to those!)

Yeah this forum has slowed way down. We used to be very..VERY active. It was like a daily gathering of many members each evening. But social media and stuff like that has cut into forums as being a casual hangout.

Welcome to SG :) I ride as well, a softail Deuce (sorry to hear about the wreck).

Hey Brian, I think the Springers' front ends look sweet... I don't particularly like high ape hangers on them, lol.
Disclaimer: Please use caution when opening messages, my grasp on reality may have shaken loose during transmission (going on rusty memory circuits), even though my tin foil hat is regularly audited for potential supply chain tampering. I also eat whatever crayons are put in front of me.

I don't like apes period...but....everyone has personal tastes. I have the standard Buckhorns...which are perfect comfy for me. It's like sitting in a lazy boy recliner.

Hey, there is life here on SG! Thanks so much to everyone for the great welcomes. Next round would be on me if circumstances were a bit different. *wink*

Thanks, Humboldt! You've almost got my name right; it's S-y-k-lops, not S-k-y-lops. Like Cyclops (with his one eye), but with a screwy spelling. I'm weird like that.

I'd be happy to post my recipe, soon as I find the appropriate area of the forum. I still haven't puzzled out if this forum is specific to anything in particular.

I am a cook as well, just not a very good one. There's a couple things I make well, but if it's not a baking project, my imagination is kinda limited. Probably from the TBI I suffered in the wreck.
I don't whine about that wreck, since I should have died and only lost an eye, 5 weeks of memory, and a bunch of broken bones. I just share my story in the hopes of just maybe preventing one person from getting behind the wheel when they've had too much. On August 20th it'll be a whole decade since it happened and I'm still above the grass, so I can't complain!

One of the cooking things I do make well is lasagna. I'd love to swap tips on that stuff. My ol' man loves lasagna and when he's happy, I'm happy.

Thanks again for the warm welcome. I've got a few more to get to now!

Hi Dan! If you check out my reply to Humboldt just above here, I explain my screen name there.

That arm tattoo is of the best, smartest dog I ever worked with in my time in dog behavior. Her name was Bogey; I rescued her from a lousy owner from one of the vet clinics I worked in and found her potential, which was ENORMOUS. That's a story I will share here at some point, as it is rather involved.

I LOVE ink of all types, but I'm kind of a snob about it. I don't believe it should be a fashion statement or done because of a fad. Tattoos should mean something and every single one of mine has a story behind it.
Bikers have a saying about ink: "Tattoos are like scars, only with better stories." There's at least 4 more that I will be getting this year. For starters, anyway! I hope to eventually sleeve one arm.
I'd love to hear some of your ink stories sometime.

I noticed how long many of you have hung out here, and I'm kinda surprised I haven't come across this board earlier, as much into discussion boards as I was for so long.
Well, I believe there's a reason for everything, and I'm sure I came across SG exactly when I was meant to.

Thank you for the welcome!

Thank you, Cat. (Do people call you Cat? Or maybe YOSC?)

When I got wiped out I was on a 1980 Suzuki 450GS; my first bike. Very basic, no frills other than a wind screen. No floorboards, no back rest, just quick and agile. I'm in the market for a new bike now, actually. My purple beast was totaled in the wreck and I haven't been able to afford a new one since, although (thank GOD) I have many friends with bikes and I'm able to be on 2 wheels almost as often as I like. Almost.

I love the sound of your project. Nothing sexier than a Springer, IMNSFHO. David Mann is a huge favorite among our kind, and I'd love to see some pictures of your work on her, if you share that kinda thing.

Don't even get me started on green squid riders. We will be here ALL day. I've come across way too many and seen way too many smeared all over the road. It's morons like those who give the rest of us who ride a bad rep.

I'd be real happy to find a cooking thread or section here. As I told the others, I like to bake, but I need all the help I can get when it comes to cooking for my man! He's the grill master in the family and I'd be very interested to know more about those homemade rubs.

I don't get that about social media. It's not like you can have conversations like this on Facebook or Twitter, in threads that can be kept track of easily and added to whenever you like.

I hope to bring a little life back to the place, because in my many months off my last forum, I've come up with lots of things I'd like to talk about and get opinions on!

I thank you for your very kind welcome.

*pic of Syklops turning green with envy* A softail Deuce. I think I'm in love. :rotfl:
Thank you for the condolences, I do appreciate that, and you know what they say about those of us who ride: "There's 2 kinds of bikers; those who have gone down, and those who are going down." It comes with the territory, right? The danger is part of the thrill. For me it is, anyway. There is no drug on earth like it.

I'm with you on the ape hangers. Don't the arms fall asleep when they're so far above your chest with those??? And I have to imagine it's a very different feel just to maneuver the bike with those silly things.

Nope, I'll pass on the ape hangers too.

My bad Syklops, it was late and I have a lot on my mind. You can post recipes here fine, the other forums are the ones hardware/software/etc specific they get a bit touchy about. Hope you enjoy your company here. Hell of a lot slower than it used to be, but hell, so am I :) Only thing I have to say about lasagna is "no boil". Tastes just as delicious and so much easier.

Off to feed the (5) dogs. Have a good night.
