This will likely be an ongoing thread.

1. I moved about 60 gigs of files off the server today. I have never defragged this server. Should I?

Wow those are old updates...you have a bit of catching up to do. Example...remote desktop client is up to version 7.1 now.

The .NET Framework updates...if the server is running any LOB apps which rely on Framework...it's good to check with the support of that software to ensure any updates to Framework are fine. Generally they are, but as a rule of thumb I don't do major updates to the a primary component of software such as Framework without checking with the LOB app support first. Although...those sp1 update are quite old and long past so should be fine.

For proper defrag on the server..."What does it run/host?" If large active databases.....must properly deal with them before running Windows defrag.
If just file sharing...defrag isn't as necessary, NTFS file system deals with those well from clients across the network...and from a workstations net view point of view...doesn't do a thing.

I agree that defragging a server is rarely a necessity. However, it's not going to hurt after large disk changes, maybe it's best if ran after disk cleanup and when there is not much activity/file locks.

I ran disk cleanup and it gave me the option to compress files.

Absolutely NOT on a server....unless you want the end users complaining of it being glacially slow. Shouldn't run compression on any computers drive...especially a server.

What is an acceptable Free space % for drive C?
