SSD vs. WD VelociRaptor 10k drive for OS loading and apps.

Post by BOWTYE8 »

Not really trying to compete the two. I have been running VelociRaptor drive since the 74 gig version with great success.
MY current rig has a 300 gig. 85 gig for the os and whats left for other apps. HAve a 1T WD black for extra storage.

My 80 gigs is about full. 95% (emails, misc proggys etc.) I know I could move some to the 2 partician or E drive.
But..... I was looking at the 600 gig VelociRaptor or thinking of a 120 gig SSD. About the same $$.
MY MB is a Asus m4878t e. It has Sata 3g.

My goal is to have a fast OS drive. I have not read up on all the great benies of the SSD drives.
Would a SSD really shine over a Raptor? Not worrying about size. Just peformance.

well depends on the SSD, some are better than others. I've avoided them for a while now till they settled down on quality and seems that's picking up well. The new Raptors do run faster than the old version which is what I have but it's still a moving part. OCZ seems to have to edge on the SSD's from what I can tell.

Newegg has the raptor 600 for like $249 free shipping, however if you go to the site below you can get it $179 free shipping (I ran across the deal yesterday)

Here is my mother board.

I like this drive but I dont think I would benefit since I dont have sata 3
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 93070&SID=

Would like a 120 to 160 gig ssd.
arghhhhh.....

As you have said, with your existing board (Sata II- 3GB/s) you will not get the full effects, however you would still see quite an improvement with the SSD...
I have built a couple of SSD screamers of late... :D
For a boot drive, I chose this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product
I use http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820167043 as a type of primary storage for some files that I share on my LAN, with good results. (Keep in mind that with SSD you want to over size the drive, and I typically raid the boot drives and oftentimes the current in use files on primary storage drives)
For archives/long termstorage, I have been using these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822145310
No failures of these yet and I probably have at least a dozen.
Keep in mind that I still have a back up server that has a copy of everything! :rtfm:

I am getting ready to spec out a server and it will use PCI-e SSD drives. Now we are talkin'! :D

You still have the vette?

Hey there Ken,
Well which Vette? ;) I currently own a 06 Lemans Blue Z06- Fun car.
I decided on this one
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820167050
Should work well in my setup. Still will run the 300 gig raptor and have 1tb WD for deep storage.
I was looking at a few of the PCI-e drives. I have a couple of pci express slot on my MB but I have not read anything about those style of SSD's .

Just a update. I ended up buying the Itel 320 series 320 gig.
I did struggle with a few issues not actaully with the SSD drive buy my setup.
My Raptor 300 gig drive was split up into 2 particians. 80gig(which was just about full) and what was left 200gig usable.

I went to intel and downloaded there copy software but it would only copy the 80gig and create a new partician. so 80 gig and roughly 30gig. I wanted to keep the drive at 120. I had to make my 300gig raptor as one drive. My page file was on the D: drive the 2nd half of the raptor. struggled some getting it to the main C: drive. After figuring that out. I was able to delete that partician and then extend the raptor 80 part to the full 300. So before installing the SSD it went like this
c: drive rapto 80 gig(Raptor 300gig) Win7 os
D: drive 200 gig(Raptor 300 gigi)
E: Drive 1Tera WD black drive

I combined the the 80 to the rest of the raptor
so IT was
C: 300gig raptor(Still has win7 os)
D: 1Tera WD

After SSD install
c: SSD 120gig win7 os
d: 300 gig raptor...Still has teh win7 os. Did not full format just yet.....Keeping as backup for now
e: 1Tera Black drive for deep storage...plus backup.

I would have liked to perform a full new install of win 7. I usually end up doing that every 2nd or 3rd year. just to clean up and get my full speed back....but just cloned the 300gig data to the SSD.
Here is a pic of the SSD vs the 300 gig raptor.
