Newbi here with two questions

Post by timlab1955 »

Getting a new computer system from DELL which has:
i7 2nd gen intel core processor 2820 qm (I think)
SSD drive (256GB) (Primary Drive)
HHD drive (500GB) (Storage Drive)
16 GB Ram
Windows 7 Pro (64bit)
Dataram for Ramdisk

Primary uses of said computer system is to surf the net, email, and once in awhile play a game (old one) called "Harpoon". The editor to the game will only work in XP Mode, so I have that installed as well. Copy DVD movies and then use Handbrake to put them on phone. Have Corel Video Stuido V3 and running Excell spreedsheets. Now for my questions:

#1: How much faster is it between a SSD and HDD to load and get the system up and running?
#2: Is it possible to have what program I'm working with, to load into ram disk and those files associated with it (store) on HDD to load into ramdisk? For example: I'm running Corel Video Stuido and load in a movie that I'm working with all into ram disk, work on project and then at the end have file moved back to storage disk and program to leave ram disk. I'm just tring to avoid having things go back and forth on the SSD disc.
#3: Is anyone having trouble getting the speed up on the 3.0? For example: According to the reports that 3.0 will transfer data at 5GB/second. The most I can get (without using ram disk) is 10MB/second. With ram disc getting 50-60MB/second. Any suggestion?

I like this place (speedguide) as it has some very good suggestions.

Thanks all

16gb of ram is a not really enough, you may want to think about getting a minimum of 96gb of ram.

Erica: You American?
Col. Andy Tanner: Red-blooded.
Erica: What's the capital of Texas?
Col. Andy Tanner: Austin.
Erica: Wrong, commie! It's Houston.

I'm sorry did I say something wrong in my post? Just wanted to know that's all. If it can't be done, just say so.

You should get 3.0 speeds if the device is a 3.0 device, else you'll only get 2.0 speeds. For example, you can't get 3.0 speed out of a 2.0 thumbdrive.

As for the ram questions, check the documentation of Dataram for Ramdisk.
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

Your opening post smells of spam.. so we are just making sure before we get too involved with answering questions. Had you not said this:

"I like this place (speedguide) as it has some very good suggestions."

Then it wouldn't have looked more like it.. :)
