Defrag

On a win 7 home premium OS, is it a good idea to defrag it every now and then?

They do it automatically, in the background, during idle processes.
Defragging your hard drive started to become a bit more automated with WinXP....and with each OS since then...even more so.

I schedule mine once a week usually late night when I'm not on it as I leave my pc's on all the time. If you have a SSD you really shouldn't have the need for it.

Hmmm....just realized I never did turn this of on many Vista/7 machines that I have.

It's defaulted to off..no schedule is preset unless you do it manually.

It's defaulted to "On"...with a preset of every Wednesday at 0100....so if you leave your PCs on by default, you don't have to go schedule it ..because it's already scheduled..by default.

uh oh.....No wonder those 24 Vista machines have terrible log on times.

I doubt it...log in times more related to DNS, login scripts, and GPOs.

Yep I stand corrected.. I believe I was thinking of re-arranging the time/dates from the default. meh

If you want a much better defrag program for free that allows for a boot time defrag as well, use PuranDefrag.

Yes this is one pretty good..used it a few times here lately since I ran across it.

Also now I know why I said it wasn't on a schedule by default.. I was thinking of Avast and it's no scan schedule by default lol loaded it earlier before and again today on a few comps.

I can count on one had how many times I have had to defrag a vista machine. I don't think I have done a windows 7 yet.

yeah, but it may do a little performance hit for obvious reasons.. defrag it when your not using it would make more sense.
