Here in Amarillo, on the northeast side of town, is a peculiar monument that was built and dedicated to the helium atom. Amarillo is situated on one of the largest helium reserves in the world and it's early wealth was a direct result of those reserves.
The monument stands about 6 stories tall, with the helium atom at the center. Each leg of the monument is actually a time capsule, one for 25 years, one for 50, one for 100, and one for 1000 years after the original dedication of the monument. The 25 year capsule was open (I think) around 10 years ago or so.
I took the picture back in October, later changing it to black and white. The metallic aspects of the monument seems to lend itself well to b&w. One of my favorite shots I've taken recently...
------ “The most beautiful thing we can experience in life is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer pause to wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead: for his eyes are closed.” - Albert Einstein
