Upgrade an old Netgear router?

Post by X-Nemesis »

So my parents are using a 8-9 year old netgear router. Would there be any advantage to upgrading them to a newer one? It can't be wireless as my dad's computer is down the hall in his photo room and there is lot's of metal between where the router would go and that.

Would a new router offer better line quality going over that distance (stabler speeds)

Depends on the model of his old router (and it's throughput ability)....combined with what speed his internet connection is. With todays faster (and burstable) speeds.....many older routers become a bottleneck.

I wouldn't rule out wireless not reaching his room...todays long range N hardware really can blanket quite an area...I live in a large 3 story house...full coverage in every corner.

We're talking about 125ft down the hall from their apartment...you think it may reach there?

125' hallway? I was picturing typical homes...even large ones these days...but that's a haul. 125' with lots of rooms in between may indeed be too much....worth a shot, I'm sure their current older G one doesn't do it. So may end up with a pleasant surprise.
