Hi to all
I am considering buying a Dell Laptop & am seeking some expert opinions to do so, as i have no clue having never owned one. This is not an urgent thing with me just something i want to look into and don't know where to start.
Due to poor eyesight i need a 17 inch screen with a very clear picture and text, that much i know. A lighted keyboard is also a must. Weight is not an issue.
My target price is approximately a $1000.00 CDN. as i live in Canada and would have to purchase here.
Would like something that will last into the future re performance and specs. I mostly use my comp. for surfing and stuff but would like to be able to do a bit of gaming and perhaps photo stuff as well.
32 bit...64 bit...Windows 7 Premium, Pro or Ultimate...Extended Warranties, etc are where i am hoping you'll be kind enough to point me in the right direction along with any good deal coupons you may know of to keep prices down.

Morning Larry, good to see you old northern friend.
Some points I'd like to make first, which would hold true regardless of brand.
When it comes to laptops, seek a 3 year warranty. Laptops are prone to hardware issues more often than desktops, and often require shipping out for repair. Prices for replacement parts outside of warranty are quite high.
With laptops, even more so than desktops, the more RAM the better. While Windows 7 runs better/snappier than Vista, you should still seek 4 gigs minimum, especially since you mention some photo apps.
With Vista and Windows 7, performance of the OS is better when you have dedicated/discrete graphics...since the work load of the OS graphics is offloaded to the GPU. Not to mention, performance of graphics apps is better. So look for a model with dedicated graphics like ATI or nVidia....at least 256 megs.
7,200rpm hard drive. One of the reasons laptops often feel much slower than a desktop PC, is the base models come with 5,400rpm drives. Super budget models, and ultra portables, sometimes come with even slower 4,200rpm drives. 7,200rpm makes it more responsive, and especially for any gaming and photo apps.
Will you be needing MS Office? Dell offers OEM versions of MS Office 2007 Standard at 129.00, Small Business Edition at 159.00 I think, and up from there.
Skip on antivirus, and as soon as you receive it, go to Microsofts site and get Microsoft Security Essentials, which is their own FREE and very good antivirus. If the laptop came with any trial AV, naturally fully uninstall that before installing MSE.
For processors, minimum CPU you should get is an Intel Core 2 Duo. Many less expensive models start with Celerons or older Intel Duo Core processors. The Core 2 Duo should be your minimum for perky performance, if you can, try to upgrade to a CPU with 3 megs cache...as the older base C2D started with 2 megs. The cache isn't a huge thing, but if you can.
If you're a wireless user, I prefer the Intel Wireless upgrade over the stock Dell wireless. The Intel 5300 if you're a heavy wireless user, transfer rates are much higher.
The above all being said, I'll focus on Dell. You may recall in the past seeing me say I prefer Dells Latitude line, which is one of their business grade laptops. Another biz grade laptop is their Precision...more high end graphics, for design work like CAD. And on low end of the biz grade is their relatively newer Vostro line. However, they command a higher price. And they max at 15.4" screen.

You can follow this link to the HP customizable laptops HP. Any of them are good but the DV7's have the screen size you are looking, and the DV8's have a 18" screen. The DV7 and DV8 quad editions have the newest mobile processors which are the Core i7's and the non quad's have Core 2 Duo/Quad. All of the base configurations on these models are well equipped for performance, however they are all customizable for what you are looking performance wise.
I have personally owned 4 of the customizable HP laptops and have never had issues with them.

Thanks very much for your kind offer Faust, but the Latitude seems to be out of my league in price as well as a need for that superior a laptop.
I am looking mostly for a laptop i can take to my Moms to bring her up to date on some of the pics i get from the family which i presently print out for her and some very enjoyable MPEGs i have that i know she'd get a kick out of.
I also want to see if she would take to using a laptop if shown how. Shes still pretty sharp at 91 and I was thinking it might enable me to get her one as well if she'd use it.

recently i bought a Dell 1545 for my bang-around use at http://www.dell.com/outlet . great entry level lappy with only a couple minor irritants (no activity/indicator lights on the case... such as caps lock or hdd activity). they cycle through stock rather quickly, and if youre patient you can find them for very modest prices (mine was $339 plus shipping/tax, but i shopped for about a month). same default 1yr tech support and warrantee their new-orders get. you can extend that also. they also upgraded me to win7 at no cost as well. for $1k CDN you should have no probs getting one with a premium config.

I do further support the authorized factory outlets. You often can get lucky and get a totally brand new laptop at a much reduced price. Typically it's a lightly used laptop, from a corporate short term lease. My past several laptops have been purchased in this manner. Been happy with every single one. My current laptop that I'm typing from was a higher end Thinkpad at the time, a T60P, brand new was approx $2,100 bucks, I paid $680.00. Was still in the shrink wrap, never used, warranty still good.

No luck here on the refurbished Dell site. Nothing that seems to answer my needs unfortunately.
Did you receive my email address via the PM i sent to you yesterday? Been away so long i have forgotten how to navigate the site.
Am seriouly considering the Dell Studio 17 as it seems well rated from what i can gather.
I was finally able to get Satellite Internet here and am now off the dialup i had to suffer with for years. Satellite has some restrictions but its speed more than makes up for it, that and the unlimited downloading from 2AM to 7AM

Am seriouly considering the Dell Studio 17 as it seems well rated from what i can gather.
I was finally able to get Satellite Internet here and am now off the dialup i had to suffer with for years. Satellite has some restrictions but its speed more than makes up for it, that and the unlimited downloading from 2AM to 7AM

Do they not offer wireless internet where you live? If you get Digital cellular cellphone service you should be able to get it:

No such luck nightowl. They are close but do not reach here as of yet unfortunately. The Xplornet Satellite that i went with are hoping to tweak their tower coverage within a year or so and will allow me to switch over at no cost.
The only drawback is i had to purchase my Satellite equipment and it was expensive. My hope is if and when wireless hits i can sell my modem and dish and recoop some of the money i spent.
As of now i'm elated to have satellite as dialup was a real drag over the many years that it was my only choice here.

Just wanted to say a big Thank You to all who took the time to offer their advice on a laptop for myself. It sure is appreciated and now that i have the info i am going to take the time to look around for a good deal which hopefully either Christmas or New Years Sales might supply.

Tough to beat that price on Dells online, that model laptop starts at $1,099 as it shows today, in US dollars....base config is 1 year warranty and 250 gig drive. To bump it to 2 year and 500 gig brings the price up well over the price you have,....around $1,300.00. And Costco shows they're extending the warranty to 2 years.
On Dells website, you can upgrade to a back lit keyboard for that model, $25.00 upgrade.
Perhaps Costco can offer that upgrade? If not...if a back lit keyboard is an important feature for you, perhaps with the flush of coupons we're seeing in this thread we can build one on Dells site and match/beat Costcos price.
