Looking for new card ($200 max)

Post by Epyon »

:rtfm: Before anything else: Just want to state that I know my CPU is a bottleneck, I plan on getting new mobo and C2D within a few months. :D

Not looking to spend more than $200. Was leaning towards:

Or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814150252

Hoping I can run AoC well on 1024x768 with an 8800 GT...

Any recommendations?

Those are great choices. Another card you might look at is the 8800GTS 512 based on the G92 core. AFAIK it's pretty much the best buy from nVidia right now. On average it's about 12% faster than the 8800GT so the decision is up to you, but I thought I'd give you the info.

Thank you, Joel. I'll review these options.

BFG's 9600GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3
OC2 overclocked to 690MHz/1880MHz for more performance

Going with this model you can upgrade in 100days if something better comes out with their step up program.

Pretty cheap too for 179$ and most certainly worth it compared to the 8800GTS cards considering the stepup program and how its built.

If you compare the 9600GT and the 8800GT, the 8800GT out performs the 9600GT for each game tested.

I would say go for the 8800GTS if you can afford it.

sure it out performs it..but it is more than enough to justify against what he requires and the costs...plus having the 100day step up adds more value when another card is released in a few months..179$ is a great deal for this card with a newer build design plus this BFG model through newegg has a 20$ rebate to knock it down to 159$ which is a great deal vs the small hit in performance.

Amazing how you give extra value to a card with trade(step)-up now that BFG does it...

The trade-up option is only good if wants to trade up to another card that qualifies with the trade up program within 100 days.

The 9600GT is a poor performer, and IMO overpriced for what it does.

Still a great card..and well worth the amount you can buy it for at newegg. If it was me I wouldn't go with either.. I'd add another 160$ and go with the 9800GTX OCX card that I've got now which is a very kick ass card! :thumb:

BFG has always been my card of choice and IMO better than eVGA...now they are one notch higher with their 100 day step up program vs eVGA's 90day..but hey your entitled to your opinion as is I.

No its not a great card and you could get a stock speed card for about another 30 bucks less, which would be a less bad idea than wasting more money to grab an OCed version of a poor performer.

Epyon, I saw someone on another board get a 8800GT for 90 bucks at Fry's yesterday, if theres a Fry's near you and the sale is still on its a pretty sweet deal.

8800GTS 512 would be ideal, I have one and it is a solid performer. If you go to purchase a 8800GT, be certain that it is the 512MB version.

You might find some used 8800GTX on HardOCP's for sale forum near your budget.

Yeah its still a good card for the costs...he asked for suggestions and I gave one just as good as anyone elses...You've said your peace about it which wasn't needed..just give your suggestion and let him make up his own mind..jesus!

I highly suggest it for those different reasons...If you wanted to go even higher then add a few more bucks to it and go with a 9800GTX as they are around 300$ right now and well worth it.

naw you can give your choice and your suggestion..as I did mine..no need to crap on my suggestion.

So Epyon..if you want to stay within your price range and have a solid card with a ability to step up in 100 days to the next best card which should arrive around july then I'd suggest the BFG 9600GT its a good performer and within your 200$ range to even save you some cash! :)

All I did was post reviews to show him that the 9600GT is not a better choice just because its a newer card.

Let it go man.

The 9600GT does take a performance hit against the 8800GTS but doesn't mean its not a good choice. For the costs and for the ability to step up to a better card with only the cost difference its well worth it.

I highly suggest it unless your going to play really graphic intensive games like Crysis! :thumb:

It also takes a hit against the 8800GT.

Sava,

The 8800GT is considered at this time, as the best video card under 200 dollars.

Ohh yeah it prob is... but for my choice right now if I wasn't lookin for the top of the line but also a good price for around 160$ the 9600GT with BFG and its step up program would put me right over the 8800GT on the next gen once they are released here around July therefore would be a great deal.

But thats yalls choice and suggestions..nothing wrong with that as is nothing wrong with mine. :)

The price point for the 9600gt is typically lower than the 8800GT, so it should be on board if cost important. In addition, the 9600GT works very well in SLI. Two 9600GTs are faster than a 9800GTX, and for less money.

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.a ... C8Junction

If you do not mind waiting for the rebate, 240 dollars offers an SLI equipped motherboard owner a quick alternative.

Consider as well, mid-June will be the release of a new crop of video cards.
