K6-2 overclocking

Post by waferdog »

Just a general interest question. I've been thinking of trying to overclock my secondary machine just to do it, but I'm not really sure of the best route to take (Should I just go 5 X 100mhz or is that too much?). I would appreciate any help or advice anyone can give.

The machine is:

AMD k6-2 400
Asus P5A-B mobo
128 MB PC100 ram
Samsung 8.4 GB hd
Smart 100X CD (Crap)
Syquest SparQ 1 GB internal drive (too bad they went out of business, much better than Zip)
SB16
Diamond Viper 550 16 MB PCI
Motorola 56k modem (don't use, too lazy to take out)
Realtek 10Base-T NIC

I know most of that info doesn't really help getting the question answered, but I figured it can't hurt.
Thanks

Try something like 4x105, then 4x110, and maybe 4x115.. 4x120 would be good too if your components can handle it.. with the k6 series the higher FSB is better then a higher mhz rating.

I have a K6-2 533 mhz and was wondering about overclocking it. I can't seem to find a site that has anything on overclocking (that is recent that is)

Hey waferdog,

The AMD processor is generally successful in a modest overclock from what I've read.

I personally work in a company that deals with computers and electronics and have seen the specs for different processors.

AMD socket 7 processors use about twice the current of their Intel competitors. This means it runs hotter, and will need tons of cooling if you intent to run it over spec.

Gee whiz, how can I find 100 sites about o/c the AMD K6-2 using Altavista and you cant't?

Thanks for the replies. The more I read up on this the more it seems it is not worth overclocking the AMD. The performance gain would seem negligible. Perhaps if I had an old k6-2 300 sitting around it might be something to do.

BTW LoachDuke, you were able to find all those listings on Altavista because you looked there. Image Seriously, I was looking for people who had done this already and what there were experiences were. Thanks.

Even if you don't o/c it much raise the FSB setting.. my old K6 233 ran on a 3.5 x 66 setting and on 3 x 75 even tho the clock speed was lower it ran alot faster due to the FSB being higher.

I've had my AMD K6-2 400mhz @ 450 for about a year with no additional cooling added. I did have to up the voltage to the next higher setting though. I've had zero problems.

waferdog, those are old systems. Have you seen any articles on 533mhz+ AMD overclocking? I've already seen all those old sites.

Fanta, they may be relativley old chronologically, my 400 and 500 AMD's are plenty capable. They can run anything I need them too, and they are very stable. I choose to leave the newer chips alone until the price comes down. Let someone else pay the high prices. Further, it will take two years (or more) before the software is developed that requires the higher speed processors. Software always trails hardware.

If all you do is surf the web and write email... I dunno about you but I can never have enough power, everything takes too damn long.

waferdog, I wasn't saying anything about your systems. I have a k6-2 533mhz, and am very happy with it. It does pretty much what I need, from everything from gaming to internet applications.

As long as you don’t try and push it to much you should have no problems o/cing your K6.

I’ve had two K6-2 chips, a 333 and 500, I’ve been able to o/c both of them using a normal heat/fan combo and cpuidol. I managed to get the 333 up to 456 but it wasn’t stable, it was fine at 375. I’ve got the 500 running at 550, not much of an increase but its stable and it does me (for now Image).

As well as using the fsb and multipliers you’ll probably need to up the voltage slightly, by a point or two.

Hope this helps.
