Can AMDK62 use over 64megs of pc100 sdram?

Post by caleb2229 »

I have an AMD-K62 333mhz computer and am wondernig if I could add another 64megs of pc100 sdram.I heard some chipsets cant run over 64megs of ram and I am nopt sure if the K6-2's can.

If its a Super Socket 7 (SS7) then you can run more then 64mb... look inside and see if your mobo has a AGP slot (brown slot above the white PCI ones)

Well I have 4agp slots then 2pci slots above that, and a weird funny little slot above that.Is there any other way to check if I can run over 64megs of pc100 sdram?

I can say almost without a doubt yes. BTW that funny little slot above the 4 PCI slots is the AGP slot. If you have one you might think about getting a new Video card that goes in there. Go ahead and get another 64, 128 is where you should be nowadays.

I said I have 4AGP slots and 2PCI slots on top of that and I do have an up to date Video Card I have a Voodoo 3 2000PCI.I dont have a AGP slot over my 4AGP and 2 PCI slots so does that mean I cant get more ram or what?

Uh, first of all, you would have only one AGP slot. It's for video only. It's the top one, and it should be brown and short. PCI slots are white and longer. ISA slots are black and longest.

You can have as much memory as your L2 cache will allow. Example: with my EPoX MVP3G board, it can cache 256 MB of RAM. The chip is an AMD K6-2 400.

ok...any way here's my stats..
Mobo:Unknown
Prossesor:AMD-K62 333mhz
Video Card:Voodoo3 2000PCI
Ram:64megs of pc100 sdram
Note:The prossecor was originally a genuin Pentium 166mhz prossecor but we bout a EverGreen upgrade module which is basically an adapter and it alowed us to use up to date prossecors.Any way how can I tell how much ram I can hold? The IBM aptiva manual that came with my computer said we can hold a max of 64 megs of pc100 sdram but that was when we got it 2 years ago and since then it has been upgraded ALOT....It is now what I stated above.

Its a damn good thing PC's dont have 4 AGP slots. I would have a V5 5500, V3 3500TV, GeForce1 and a GeForce2 for whatever mood I'm in on a given day. LOL. It could get costly for a lot of people.

To answer your question just go to shop and buy a 64 Meg Dimm with an asurance that you can return it if it doesnt work in your board. A good shop will do it no problem. If it doesnt work then you should seriously consider buying a new board.

based on what you said there I don't think it has AGP, and it'll prolly only cache 64mb.

I can asure you it does have an AGP slot.I see it now.I used to have a crummy video card in there.I didnt know that was called an AGP slot...I know the white ones where PCI but thought the long black ones where AGP.Any way now I know

Oh ya one more question.Like I said my comp is 333mhz and I was wondering I can either buy a 400mhz Prossecor or 64megs of pc100sdram which should I get? Whats more important these days? I play alot of games but also do alot of programing. Is Ram more important to gaming or processor? On the video end of things I have a Voodoo3 2000PCI so that will be fine for a few months or so.

Thats weird.. If you had to use a evergreen adapter it shouldn't have a agp. All SS7 boards have voltage settings low enough to use K6-2 and K6-3 processors. Unless you bought the evergreen upgrade without testing a regular chip first, or checking your manual. The difference between your 333 and a 400 wouldn't even be hardly noticable, and the ram would only slow down your computer if it can only cache 64mb. If I was you I would just spring for a new computer.

Herm....Well aparently I dont have an AGP slot then.I have a little light brown thing over my PCI slot that dosent look at all like yours,It looks like a bunch of pins sticking out.Any way that really sucks that I cant add more ram....*sigh* I think I may just upgrade my prossecor.

You should maybe try overclocking your existing chip... might be able to get that to 350-400 if your lucky.

I wanna over clock it but My Mobo is a cheap piece of garbage os no O/Cing programs detect it and my Bios dont let me change Mobo setting and I cant seem to find the jumper setting for my Prossesor *Sigh* So I guess I will have to but a whole new prossecor...Will going from 333mhz to 400mhz make a big difference in gaming?

If you want to use your pc as a gaming rig you should probably just save up your money and buy a whole new motherboard and cpu. This means you'll probably need a new case as well(ATX). If your memory is running at 66Mhz you might also have to invest in new memory. It doesnt make much sense to put in a 400 cpu as that is fast becoming slow to game with as well. You should be thinking about getting a processor of some kind around 600 Mhz and up if you want your pc to last for a while. Besides the K6-2 is showing its age and it never was a good solution for gamers. I know I had one and got rid of it for the much better gaming solution the celeron which is also very overclockable.
