packetloss
Hi guys i could use some help. My isp is Cox communications and i get periods of high packetloss while playing Americas Army. From what i see i have a wireless G Linksys router with a Touchstone Telephony Modem. Speakeasy speed test results are 15546 down and 1641 up out of NY. please help. I usally ping very low 50's 60's but the packetloss is annoying. thanks

MSS = 1460

Have you run some ping plotter runs yet to 192.168.100.1 and then http://www.cox.com?
If not,
http://www.pingplotter.com/download.html
Set that up to run 100 traces, 2.5seconds apart, include all samples and note which hops you see the loss on. then set it up to ping plot those hops IP address off cox.com., if you get packet loss on 192.168.100.1 stop right there, as the loss is inside your setup before the modem or the modem itself.
Also, run the line quality test here and post a link to your results. http://www.dslreports.com/tools
It take s a while to run that test, just start it and go back in like 10 minutes or so.
Explanation, 100 packets at 2.5 seconds is rough 4.5 minutes of pinging the host and the 2.5 second interval keeps you from being identified as packet flooding and getting ignored giving false packet loss.
If they say its great..it doesn't always mean its working like it should. Still sounds like Packetloss with regards to Cox. Seen this first hand over a few months of hell with Comcast so be sure to eliminate everything on your end to cover your side and go after them to send the right people down that know what they are doing to look at it and get it resolved.soly wrote:Checked with Cox....everything checked out great. Update*
Reformatted HD to no avail. I still get packetloss in game but not as much. My web browsing is still sluggish but my dl speeds are fine. Also, i found out that we signed up for voice over ip that came as a package deal. not sure if this would cause any problems im just throwing it out there. any help is appreciated.

Reformatted hard disk and re-installed Windows XP (SP2?) means you have to ensure you download and install all the latest Windows updates.soly wrote:Update*

Then post a TCP Analyzer report and tell us what speed you paid to get.

If you are working off a clean install you have eliminated that your computer is the problem. You need to take this up with the ISP regardless since it appears as if it is their fault!
Keep on them about it till its fixed!
Ok so 2 techs came down and tested everything. they both said the modem is working perfectly and they pin pointed the router as being the problem. Its a lynksys wrt54g v8 router. without the router plugged in everything works fine. so basically i upgraded the firmware on the router but to no luck. everytime i plug in the router i cant get internet access. before it would work most of the time but now its completely messed. so what kind of router should i buy??
is there a reset button on the back to push and hold in 10seconds to reset the defaults?soly wrote:Ok so 2 techs came down and tested everything. they both said the modem is working perfectly and they pin pointed the router as being the problem. So basically, it wasn't the ISP finally admitting they were at fault, it was your hardware. Any router is as good as the next, you can either research online for firmware problems on routers, or get another linksys. I personally like linksys, before they were bought by cisco and still after.

I love my DGL 4300 DLink Gamer router.. best one I think on the market!YARDofSTUF wrote:the Dlink Gamerlounge models are probably the best.
But I'm curious as to the reset button that may be able to clear his router and fix the problem..if not I suggest a Dlink over anything else. Any router with web interface is a plus since you don't have to load crap software to admin it.

The 4300 is nice but dlink has newer gamer lounge routers that offer mimo and N support.
well yeah the 4500..nice step up, kinda over kill somewhat but it does look pretty cool lookin and give double the capacity.YARDofSTUF wrote: The 4300 is nice but dlink has newer gamer lounge routers that offer mimo and N support.
now that you've renewed me lookin at it I might see about upgrading.
YARDofSTUF wrote:Well every router isnt the same, if your a gamer or torrent alot the Dlink Gamerlounge models are probably the best.
Given the technical knowledge of this poster, they will all be the same, I have yet to see a game that needs wireless N support. Most games don't make full use of the 4Mb throughput on G. Unless it comes with some sort of newbie game config for port routing, they all pretty much end up being the same thing, a device that routes packets.
That said, nay router a user likes, is a fine with me, I just prefer linksys because I know cisco, and I know its good. I had problems with Dlink products when they were starting out, and it sort of steered me away from them. Only real router issue I can think of though, is netgear and Xbox360's.
soly wrote:well i tried resetting the router with no luck. everytime i plug it in i cant get internet access. the only thing i noticed under network properties is when the router is plugged in there is another connection logo saying gateway which is disabled. beyond that im clueless.
When you plug this router in are you resetting the modem? Not sure about your specific ISP, but most lock into a device, and hot swapping the device doesn't work.
Wow i feel like this thread doesnt wanna die lol. Anyways, back to business....the router is still dropping packets and im now noticing my ventrillo ping shoots up in the 2000 area when the packetloss is occuring. Are there any settings within the router (wrt54g v8) that i can play with to help resolve the issue or should i just go out and buy a new router?? I would ratehr try and fix this than spend money on another considering its been about 2 months since its been here

Does ventrillo act this way without the router as in bypassing it to make sure it isn't something else?soly wrote:Wow i feel like this thread doesnt wanna die lol. Well I mean now.. take the router out of the loop and just run without it if that works till you can get a new one.soly wrote:honestly in the short time spent without the router i would say no. Is there any 3rd party firmware for this guy or possibly any advanced wireless settings in the router that i could adjust for gaming/packetloss???
But see now your saying "wireless" now but earlier in the thread you said you were hard lined into the router with network cable???

I guess your either doing different things now for a different problem on top of what was already there or this was the issue to begin with?
/boggle?soly wrote:Its called a wireless router is it not??? I dunno anyways it s a linksys wrt54g v8.
It is a wireless G router, but now I wonder are you connecting to it through the wireless part or just through Ethernet cables to the 4-port switch in the back.
Do you lose packets pinging 192.168.100.1 or 192.168.0.1 or is that one 1.1, bah...

If you're interested in 3rd party firmware:

Make sure when you do this you are connected by ethernet cable to the router.
