High ping with ethernet modem?

Post by murker »

I was hoping someone could help me.

I have recently purchased a new ethernet modem (speedtouch 510 v6) as my usb modem I was using seems to be unstable and i'm always losing connection, where as on the ethernet modem I don't.

But im having a bit of a problem, it seems that with the ethernet modem I get a ping of 60 where as on the usb modem I get a ping of 30.

This also happened on my last pc with a different ethernet modem. Only thing that was the same was the ISP. (talktalk)

My download speeds seem to be really good but when ever i use an ethernet modem I get high latency, is there any way I can tweak something to sort this out??

Speedtouch has high initial high pings at hop 1.

Do a tracert to http://www.yahoo.com for both the old and new modem and compare ping times.

To do a tracert, click 'Start' and then 'Run'. Type "cmd" into the box and click 'ok'.

A DOS black screen will appear. Type after the C:\>

tracert http://www.yahoo.com

and press enter key

When test is completed, move mouse cursor to the DOS black screen, click right and choose 'select all'.

Move mouse cursor to the Quick Reply box of this forum, click right and 'paste'.

No suggestion. Problem is inherent in this modem and its available firmware:

http://www.thomson-broadband.co.uk/code ... ductID=532

Perhaps you can contact Fenn of this thread to see if his modem is working well:

The timed out at hop 1 is probably due to the firewall setting in NetGear blocking ICMP signals. Set it to allow and the timed out should go away.

I managed to fix the problem, it was due to the ethernet being on 100/half, ping is fine now :)

Do you suggest to turn the ICMP off anyway or is it better on?

I unblock ICMP pings as my comp is behind a router.

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Hardware affects latency?! Latency is ping right?

If that is so, maybe I can offset my wifi's ping EVEN BY A BIT by buying better hardware. I am subscribing to a wifi ISP: http://www.smart.com.ph/SmartBro/ I use a P4VP-MX mobo with an integrated 10/100Mbps LAN. (I have 0 knowledge about LAN and stuff but this is what one of the sites say about my LAN: "Integrated 10/100 Mbps LAN MAC + VT6103 PHY")

Question, can I buy an external card to better my latency? Or do I need to buy an external modem? (And I am on wifi, are modems compatible with it?)

Thanks for any helpful insights; Troger's and Murker's exchange startled me and gave me some hope for my eternal ping problem.

This is only true when there is a duplex mismatch between your NiC and the router or modem.

Ensure the Speed & Duplex of your NiC is set to autosensing or auto negotiation will do.

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager

Expand on Network Adapter and click right on name of NiC and select 'Properties'

Go to Advanced -> Speed & Duplex and set accordingly.

Thanks!

I am very satisfied with your freeware I put it in my blog. Here is an article about the TCP Optimizer there. It's just a PR two blogsite but hey, anything to spread awareness of this great freeware.
