Intermitent connection Linksys and Netgear =\

Post by Otacon132 »

I have had it pretty much, i cant isolate the problem. Ive tried everything for the past 3 weeks, google'd multiple forum's, i just cant seem to get my finger on it. When i ahve my router connected my internet connection is intermitent, ive gone through 3 linksys routers, old and new, 2 netgear routers, old and new.....i get the same problem each time. My connection to trillian/aim gets dropped randomly, and my global connection locks up at times, and i ahve to reset my modem/router. No problems persist when i connect the modem without a router.

my setup consists of either a linksys (which had been running perfectly for 5 months) or a netgear, i have both here brand new, and none work fine. A wired computer, 2 wireless laptops, and a wii. My isp is comcast, and according to them, they recently updated their services and bandwith was uncapped. This is the only thing i can see being an issue.

Do routers have a problem with faster than normal connections? i dont understand anymore, i know that question is rediculous, especially since im not a retard when it comes to networking and the computer world.

please, any help would be great.

Are your PCs clean from malware?
Do you run any P2P sharing programs?

If you power cycle your router, reboot your computers...and make sure you never start up that torrent program....I'll be your connection remains stable.

did you mean "i bet"?

i think im gonna try that, ive been running different test to try and pin point my problem, so far ive come tot he conclusion that its not my modem, router, or computer......and i think you might be right, i need to test that out. I noticed my netgear runs the network a bit smoother (but i have to have ports forwarded for aim/msn...which i didnt need prior to having any issues) but my torrent program doesnt seem to be seeding - or so it doesnt ever show im uiploading when i check.

ill try that out, thank you.

any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated

And disable router logging features. The linksys (wrt54g) has less ram than older versions and if logging is enabled then it will utilize availabe ram in no short order and connections will get dropped. The netgears don't have this issue afaik. My bet is a client or application is killing the connection.

i have a significant update - i just experienced a disconnect while on the computer. I have a great connection via the linksys router - while playing an online game. Latency is 50ms, which is great. Im able to browse the internet without a problem and everything seems to be working nnormaly.

While in game, ig ot disconnected from Trillian, and was reconnected. I lost connection to aim/msn but not to the game - therefor i have a feeling its a router issue (ports maybe, but also there was a new trillian version that was just released) im going to try downloading AIM and running that see if i get disconnected.

Any help is appreciated, and also, what is the word on buffalo routers?

What game?
Doubt it's a port issue.
What do you get for an average when you run several online speed tests?
