Router is dropping my connection

Post by Otacon132 »

I currently have a Linksys WRT54G v.6 router, and a comcast modem from scientific atlanta. My internet speeds are 15mb down, and 2.5 mb up when im directly connected to the computer. Now, this is where it gets complicated. With the router connected, my internet speeds drop to 10mb down, and 600kb up on a good day. (bleh)

But where its really giving me an issue is that my connection keeps getting lost, and dropped. I play mmorpg's and other online games, and i get horrible latency issues, 30 second lag spikes, and ussually its all followed with a drop and disconect. To fix the problem i have to reset the router/modem only to have the issue occur again in about 10 minutes.

This just started happening about a week ago, the router is about 6 months old by now, and havent had problems until now. Personally what i think the issue might be is that the modem is probably not compatible with the router (only im not sure why it would give me issues 6 months down the road), or maybe my router took a crap........again....(god, ive gone through about 5 routers in 3 years).

And lastly, i did do a firmware upgrade to the latest firmware, any suggestions?

and if worse comes to worse, does anyone recommend a good wireless router that is intended for high speeds/gaming? and possibly a modem?

sounds to me like it could be a bit of a line issue, would give your ISP a call. make sure there is nothing weird popping out the local exchange, or any recent changes etc

It's an older generation router...but shouldn't be your bottleneck. When you measure your throughput..you doing it wirelessly or wired?

Try 3rd party firmware such as DD-WRT.
