TCP Optimizer

Post by JustaHacker »

Staff,

I just recently emerged from the stone age and FINALLY got DSL, basic 768 kbaud service for starters. I was stunned  by download speeds averaging 500 kbaud, but I was curious as to why I never saw the max rate. Mind you, I wasn't about to complain. I was still far too busy constantly picking my jaw up off the floor.

Browsing through my Usenet provider's support pages, I saw constant mention of TCP Optimizer, so I downloaded it. It told me that my existing settings were a combination of missing, bogus, and ridiculous. So, being eternally cautious, I had it back up those settings, and then I let it do its thing. I didn't do any tweaking, but rather let IT make the decisions.

After a reboot, my speed was suddenly a rock-solid 750 kbaud. It barely fluctuates at all. My upload speed, though not nearly as dramatic, increased measurably from 130k to 140k.

To say that I'm impressed would be putting it mildly. :D

My prime reason for this note is to offer an enormous vote of thanks to everyone involved in its development. It's a helluva fine utility, the GUI is a no-brainer, and its default decisions obviously work VERY well. (And its advanced options allow plenty of room for "no-fear" tweaking later, because you can back up what works, then dive in and screw it up and change your mind. And you're not buried fiftyleven levels down in the registry doing it.)

Again, THANKS!

Thanks to Philip (he is the owner of SG). It is a sweet little software tool he wrote and he keeps improving it from time-to-time. Glad it worked for you (works for me too). :)

Hang around and post some more. Lots of good info at SpeedGuide. Oh.... a note of caution. Stay away from the poster called MadDoctor. He's strange. ;)

I've poked into a number of threads so far. Interesting reading, and some great info.

I've also made a sticky note re: your caution about MadDoctor... http://forums.speedguide.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
